The one thing this whole debate/news article/etc. proves is that the whole windows licensing setup is a complete and utter debacle

What on earth is wrong with having "one install - one license - one machine" ?? The whole messing around with OEMs having to support a MS o/s ?? It would simplify things for everyone (MS and the OEMs included) if, say, XP Home was XP Home(and not messed with), W7 HP was W7 HP (and not messed with). The COA should also be valid irrespective of which SP is bundled in with the installation...

Recovery media of some description should be made compulsory, along with a separate driver disk/usb and yes that means on a USB drive if it's a netbook without a cd drive.

If you've never done it, run speccy on pretty much any OEM machine, and guaranteed that the COA key that's installed won't match the sticker underneath - that's just barking. It's almost like saying that for each pc bought, there could be another one out there with a valid COA.... wouldn't it also be an anti-piracy measure to install the sticker key on a new pc ???

Think it's about time the computer industry got thier collective heads together and flamin' well sorted this whole ridiculous situation out

rant over, sorry, but it just gets my back up :(

  • The OEM license is provided to System Builders so that they may provide a 'fully assembled computer system' to their customers. Legally you were wrong to do as you stated, morally however, that is for you to decide.
I am at a loss to understand why you did not contact MS who would have provided you with the tools you needed free as a download or at cost, media and shipping, for the tools on a disk.

Here is a link to the oem licence.

The Licence is to use whatever version of Windows it comes with, you might be happy for them to have it anyway they like but not everyone is.

Oh and in the States you are allowed to backup copies

Yes I did, on the OEM I downloaded with my Valid Windows Licence

As you have said yourself the licence was for whatever version of windows the licence came with, not the oem copy you downloaded.
Downloading a copy is not making a backup.
How long have you worked for M$ ?

Hope nothing happens to your computers because you are going to be knackered lol

I don't work for Microsoft, but I do make my money off their software, I'm a developer who generally builds things off their server stack (Win Server / .net / IIS / SQL Server / SSRS SSAS SSIS.)

I try not to clutter this forum with my opinon or personal attacks. I find both to be a waste of time.
On a personal level I will do whatever suits me at the time, its not somthing I feel I have to post here.

Oh and its not like its difficult to stay perfectly legal with software licences.
Sorry to upset you again but the Recovery CDs offer no option for this and the third party apps do not work with Recovery CDS

You are the one who is fixated on CDs, recovery MEDIA can be anything, disc, usb key, the hdd itself whatever. The media will boot and build the OS to whatever factory the menufacturer decided

There is no need or indeed any use case for any thrid party software to get involved.
Just because you cant do whatever you want with doesn't mean is broken.

Additionaly it is generally possible to extract all the windows installation files, its static activation file, oem installed drivers & software and setup scripts if you know how. Its not impossible but its not worth the time in most cases.
No god forbid there are people like me who help people without using pirated serials, Christ the world would end

    LOL oh my hearts bleeding

Well it's supposed to this year anyway might as well get it out of the way (world ending not your heart you might want to get that looked at)
  • Errm yes they do (edit I meant third party not the recovery cds)
Bangs head on wall, thats what I said. Third Party apps can create USB Memory Stick installs but Recovery Cds don't

Bangs head on wall again, It's a OEM serial/Licence

It's paid for and I have licences to prove it so not really interested

    Are you sure?

I'm legal, I have the Windows OEM Licences to prove it, boohoo

Hey if you object to people discussing it no one is forcing you to post on the topic

I've already proven there is, you just need to read it.

But let's be a little picky then , since you insist on being picky
    I could cite
I obviously know a damn site more than you and your "friend" who followers you round saying
that more followers of this site know a damn sight more about English and it's use, but hey that would be churlish.:(

Which is confirming what I said Mr Gates. Third party apps do not create bootable USB Sticks because they need a full OEM copy of XP & Recovery CDs do not offer the option so I was right.

Don't worry Mr Gates, I know how nasty you "people" can get when proven wrong
