Perhaps this is why Comet were sold off for £2 just before Xmas , bargain ... not!!
Anglo-French electrical goods retailer Kesa has announced plans to sell off its troubled UK-based Comet stores to a private equity firm for just £2.
The buyer is a group of companies under the name "Hailey" advised by retailer turnaround specialists OpCapita.

The lack of Recovery discs are due to people ignoring the option to make them when suggested to do so.
All of the laptops I have purchased have either come with Recovery Discs or given me the option to make them.

Do you have any I.T background because I can tell you a fresh install is far better than a recovery

In many cases a recovery IS a fresh install - the HDD gets wiped and a backup of the OS/system (from the recovery disk) is put on.
  • It was a third party that were copying them even though it was for Comet.

If you need to reinstall Windows because of a virus or its just currupt what are you supposed to do without a copy of the OEM

Use a copy of the recovery media you should have been prompted to make or the OEM will provide you with physical media at a cost.

Ok I'll ask again, was I wrong to download XP OEM so I could format my Netbook and then use my genuine XP Licence to register it because I didn't have a copy due to M$ not giving them out

Cutting out the relevant point I made in your quote does not work as I said
"Surely you are missing the point, Microsoft don't sell PC's, and because you buy a PC with Windows installed , M'soft don't install it (and also they sell it very cheap to OEMs , but not Comet ) When you get a PC with Windows on it M'Soft give you the tools to make a rescue and also a recovery disc (eg Full Backup) , for you to bypass the need to ask for recovery discs. ....snipped ^^^^"

Never had one but being an I.T professional I preferred putting the fresh install on anyway and this is what the serial is for

One thing I'd like to understand though, if Microsoft were not offering recovery discs, how r u supposed to install it again in the event you need a fresh install?

when was the last time you installed windows?

since 2007 Micrsoft have not provided a windows recovery disc, when happens is when you install windows you are asked if you want to create a recover disc.
even so before that the recovery disc was FREE with PCs/Laptops, and even now all you need is a blank cd (20p) to make a recovery disc.

And because the OS is already installed its a OEM serial which is only available for new installs ;)

Of course you should download a copy of the OEM disks , but when did Microsoft supply

    1) OEM Disks for any PC
    2) Any Disks for use on a Netbook

oh and when did "netbooks" come with cd drives / dvd drives?

As you point out you are an I.T. professional, you got me there, I ain't now but I suppose I forgot all I ever knew in my last two years , what a waste of 27 years :(
