One thing I'd like to understand though, if Microsoft were not offering recovery discs, how r u supposed to install it again in the event you need a fresh install?Minds are like parachutes - they only function when open.

And even then the recovery isn't the full Windows however the serial you get with the laptop/computer is for a full version of Windows OEM. Its like buying a car and just being given the keys0 -

I bought a second hand Notebook last year but I wanted to format the HDD for a fresh install. Now as you know there are no cds but the Notebook did have a valid Windows Licence so I had to download a OEM copy of XP and use an app to make a bootable USB install.
Now some might say this was piracy but I have a valid Windows XP licence
If the media is already 'paid for' then why were Comet selling it?
It can't be that hard for you to grasp can it?
If they supplied the Recovery Discs free of charge, they might have an argument.
If they made a profit, they will have to relinquish it.0 -

Because M$ don't give it even though they've charged for it. Comets only mistake is asking so much.
No, covering the costs would be fair so around £1.49 max.
I agree, thats where they don't really have a leg to stand on0 -

Still wrong. It is for the OEM manufacturer to supply Recovery media as per their agreement with Microsoft.
So you often get the option to create some via the Recovery partition on the HDD.
Comet are not an OEM, so have no rights to produce or to sell.0 -

Surely you are missing the point, Microsoft don't sell PC's, and because you buy a PC with Windows installed , M'soft don't install it (and also they sell it very cheap to OEMs , but not Comet ) When you get a PC with Windows on it M'Soft give you the tools to make a rescue and also a recovery disc (eg Full Backup) , for you to bypass the need to ask for recovery discs. Please pay attention ... Caveat Emptor , SOGA will not help, and Microsoft have no reason to give a FF about "Microsoft were not offering recovery discs". The PC maker made it with their cut down / customised version of Windows, which did not cost £99 per pc .4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Comet are not a party to the agreement between Microsoft and the computer manufacturer to provide software for distribution as a complete package.0

I for one, hope Comet win. The lack of recovery discs is a nice little earner for Microsoft, causes millions of people problems, and extra costs, they should be supplied with the machine. £15 is cheaper than a visit to a techie or a new pc or a windows 7 disc, which is what a lot of people resort to when the machine won't boot.
The lack of Recovery discs are due to people ignoring the option to make them when suggested to do so.
All of the laptops I have purchased have either come with Recovery Discs or given me the option to make them.0 -

Ok I'll ask again, was I wrong to download XP OEM so I could format my Netbook and then use my genuine XP Licence to register it because I didn't have a copy due to M$ not giving them out0 -

It was a third party that were copying them even though it was for Comet.
If you need to reinstall Windows because of a virus or its just currupt what are you supposed to do without a copy of the OEM0
