argos faulty item, no catalogue number-no refund

to be fair Chad Valley is exclusively owned by Argos, but like others have said, no proof of purchase or catalogue number makes it very hard for them to age the item and ensure it did not get sold as parts missing as others have said.
I would go to the family member for information - easiest way...
it could have been sitting in the box for years in the loft after being purchased from Woolworths who before they went bust were the exclusive chad valley retailer. ( not saying this is the case here) but Argos will need the receipt/proof of purchase
also chad valley is sold by Amazon

thanks guys, i will just have to ask her, i know however it was not bought online, as it's not her style, i understand where argos are coming from, but as they seem to be a main supplier it is rather annoying, bet she bloody paid cash too, :mad:however she may have kept receiptlet he without sin cast the first stone0

Its probably better for you if she did pay cash (so long as she kept the reciept!), as if it was with her card they would outright refuse to deal with you as your not their customer, good luck getting it sorted though.0

Do Argos still sell the item? If they do, some people might suggest that you buy another one, put the old one in the box (that will have a sticker on) and return it for a refund. Of course I'm not suggesting this.0

Have you thought of just contacting Chad Valley and asking if they can send the missing bits? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

You're right about the transaction logs of the tills, I used to work in a clothing store years ago, and even then we could pull the exact details of a sale up with just an approximate date and one other bit of information (catalogue number, barcode UPN, description). Thing is, this can be abused so retailers will still often require to see some evidence it was purchased in their store.
I actually used this to my advantage once, I got a Flip-Cam as a gift from my boss, completely useless to me but definitely not a situation where you can ask for the receipt. I took it to the nearest highstreet retailer who I know sells them and asked if I could exchange it - they said not without a receipt but I made up a story about a gift from a Granny, and that I knew she bought it from 'one of your London stores sometime in November and paid cash'. The cheery chappy at the till put these incredibly loose search terms into their computer and sure enough came up with about 50 matching transactions - he was happy to put my exchange against one of these picked at random!
Got myself a xBox Kinect instead - much better0 -
So we have the situation where the OP doesn't know where it was bought, doesn't know when it was bought & has no idea whether there is a receipt, entry on a bank statement or anything else as proof of purchase.
Anybody see the problem in getting a replacement? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

thats why we've all more or less said get hold of the reciept if possible, if not, no joy!0 -
Also forgot to mention that as the OP was not the purchaser then they have no rights under SOGA technicallyThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
