argos faulty item, no catalogue number-no refund

hi, just wanting a little bit of advice please. my sons nana, who lives over 150 miles away bought him a chad valley toy from argos for his christmas, we went to put it together and a few of the parts were missing. we went to return it to argos today-where i believe she bought it from, we havent asked her yet as we didnt want to have to disappoint her over the faulty item, but as the box did not have an argos catalogue number attached, they would not accept it back.
i do not have the receipt obviously, but i dont know of anywhere else that sells chad valley toys, and think she would of bought this toy as it had a massive reduction on it?
i know i can always ask if she still has the receipt etc, but what if she hasnt and it was bought from argos?where do i stand?

if they want a catalogue number, haven't you looked in the catalogue to find it?

If it was bought with a credit or debit card, a bank statement showing the purchase is as good as a receipt (this is legally acceptable despite what they may say in the shop).

Presumably they'll want to see the box with their catalogue number on to prove that they supplied it

do you mean you aren't sure its the right Argos or perhaps didn't buy from Argos?

You definately need proof of purchase. The items could esaily have been sold on ebay as parts missing and you could be (unwillingly) trying to scam argos out of product/money. You really need to ask for the reciept, it couldve been bought from anywhere.

When a transaction takes place on most modern tills they record evey bit of detail possible. You showing a statment with date, amount and reatailer will allow them to check the reciept on their systems adn will be able to pull it off showing exactly what items were bought etc.

to be fair Chad Valley is exclusively owned by Argos, but like others have said, no proof of purchase or catalogue number makes it very hard for them to age the item and ensure it did not get sold as parts missing as others have said.

I would go to the family member for information - easiest way...

    Doesn't matter.

I took an item back to a shop years ago without a receipt. Despite the item being one of many. Once they had my card details, they found my purchase on their system without any problem.
