thank you for this help.
perhaps barclays always did charge me, but because it was a percentage added on to the price and not a separate charge, i never noticed.
will look into nationwide cards.
thanks again!0 -
Yeah my bro is in Oz now and uses that (Nationwide) only whilst he is there
he did not get given a full debit card with them though, so won't be using it when he gets back0 -
HELP.........I opened the Alliance & Leicester premier account which offered a £100 payment for joining. However, A&L are not honouring the account opened in April 2007. Any ideas from previous recipients of this deal. Thanks.0

I have recently opened a current accoutn with 0% overdraft..
what happens if I withdraw the full approved Overdraft amount and deposit it in another acount that pays interest?
are there any charges for overdrawing within your approved amount?0 -
Hi, I opened a Premier Direct Current Acct with A&L back at the beginning of June as I'm claiming my charges back from Sh(Abbey). A&L were supposed to do the switching of DD's from my old acct to the new one and youd've thought that since that was on 11/06/07, five or so weeks would be plenty of time to do it in. Today I get a letter form Sh(Abbey) telling me that my car ins. wasn't paid and I would be charged £35!!!  On further investigation, I find out that none of my DD payees have received any new instructions. I phoned A&L to be told the new instructions weren't sent out to anyone till yesterday!!!! I went mental.  That left me potentially expecting more charges from Sh(Abbey) as it appeared all my DD's would come from the old acct with no money in it!!!
Have rapidly closed A&L acct, removed funds, returned them to Sh(Abbey) and (I'll take my chances on them closing my acct later) been in to Sh(Abbey) and negotiated £85 refund on recent charges.:T :T Returned home to phone all my DD payees again to make sure they are taking from old acct and wrote very angry letter to A&L demanding a refund of my £35 and generally ranting about how bad they've been. I also quoted their welcome pack booklet which says it guarantees you won't be charged overdraft fees in the switching process and also says "We take the hassle out of switching your current account".....I THINK NOT!!!

Hi; I've been wanting to switch accounts from HSBC for years now but have never got around to it because I have a loan and credit card with them and don't know how easy it'd be to find another bank to take on my loan. Is it possible to find a bank that would cover the loan or would i have to continue paying back to HSBC (if so I'd have to keep my HSBC account live as they won't accept payments onto the loan from other banks - evil whatsits!)
I'm desperate to leave HSBC as they have been driving me crazy for years now but I've been of the impression that it was a 'like it or lump it' scenario! Having found this website it seems that there are often more options than at first there may appear so I'm hoping someone will be able to advise me; is there any way of getting shot of HSBC altogether or would I have to leave my credit card and loan with them until paid off at some point in the next 3 years :0(0 -
We made the mistake of going over to Halifax from HSBC earlier in the year when they were doing this promotion. We certainly got the £100, direct into our account without propblems, but we also discovered that their customer service is appalling (we always seem to get through to the Belfast call centre, and they are often NOT nice), and they charge £40 every time you have an unpaid item. Due to the very complicated nature of our finances, this has happened twice and effectively wiped out the £100 incentive.
A WORD OF WARNING FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING A DIRECT DEBIT TRANSFER SERVICE:
Halifax wrote to all our direct debits giving the new details, and then promptly cancelled them with our old bank for us. Several of the companies hadn't received/actioned the instructions, so tried to take from our old account to be told that the instruction had been cancelled. We had to pay several late payment charges to these companies through no fault of our own, simply because the old direct debit had been cancelled before the new one was set up.
You'd think Halifax'd check the DDs were set up on the Halifax account before cancelling the old ones but apparently not - they say that's the customer's responsibility. They also don't generally entertain any claims for refunds of charges in these instances.
And now we're going to try and go back to HSBC, we've got it all to do again which is such a hassle - nightmare!
So think carefully how desperate you are for £100...!0 -

Are you sure you can't pay the HSBC loan from another account? Never heard of that before. We've got HSBC personal loan and pay it from our Halifax (grrr!) account, never had any bother. Spoke to them recently and got into general conversation with the bloke, who happened to mention something about standing orders from other banks taking 3 days to clear, so it's obviously something they're used to. Same should apply for their credit card - as long as you make the payments on time, I can't see how they can insist on which account you make the payment from.0 -
Hi all, first time on the forums, but a budding "money saver"!
Just called up to switch my account, thus receiving the £100 incentive, but found that this was only available for.......... to quote a tv advert for another bank.........."Brand new customers only!"
Not happy, as I explained to the guy on the phone, it made me feel like switching to another bank!
Even if i closed my account and re-applied, they would still not give me the £100, because I had held an account with them in the last 2 years.
