Car insurance claim and mileage

I guess the potential dispute would be about non-disclosure of increased mileage. I don't know how the insurer will react but worst case would be to not provide cover and only settle the TP costs (no repair to the OP's vehicle) under their obligations under the Road Traffic act. Then pursue the policyholder for the money.

That would be really harsh but some insurers look for any opportunity to reduce the payout or boost profits.

Are you trying to worry the OP even more than he is! I would say that is unlikely, you only have to read a page or two of the FOS cases to see people make much graver mistakes and the companies are not able to repudiate cover. After all, although the OP has seriously underestimated it, there are no real checks and balances in place for mileage anyway. MOTs do not line up with renewal dates, and cars can be sold and that interim mileage never captured.

EDIT, not that I think people should try and lower their stated mileage to save money of course!

Looking back, I did about 2000 extra miles in a 3-4 month period (Mid may - mid sept) as a close friend was having family issues. (100 mile round trips once or twice a week). Would that fall under a reasonable reason for exceeding the estimate?

That would normally be fine, they basically want an explanation that shows it was a mistake and you did not intentionally give incorrect information to save money.

However as stated before, there is a very good chance that you will hear nothing more about it and your claim goes through

Dave - assuming you get away with your explanation - highly likely I think - can I suggest that if you are the worrying kind that your posts here indicate you are, you may be better of finding another way of keeping your insurance costs down (eg accepting a vuluntary excess) on your next renewal:)
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.
  • Will do. The frustrating thing is that wasn't to keep costs down.

Interesting post. I have a problem about mileage also - the instrument cluster on my VW failed and it being a bit of a banger I repaired it myself by buying a replacement cluster from a breaker and fitting it. My trouble is that the original failed at 80,000 and the replacement one reads 128,000 which is going to look crazy come MOT time in March. I am within my estimated mileage of 14000mpa but the figures on my paperwork will be way, way out. I've never heard of a mileage correction service and its a sealed electrical unit so you cant just put a drill on it and wind it back to where it should be. I worry it might cause me a problem should I need to claim
  • All you can do is to tell your insurers what the position is with your speedo as informing them in advance of any potential problem will be beneficial to you if they should ask some searching questions later.

That way of doing it finished years ago,now it's just plug in a laptop & enter any mileage you want, maximum of 5 minutes work!
