Yes if he can get access to the wifi then facetime will be the better option, next best would be for him to use somebody else's phone, remind him to switch data off when he boards the plane, as frankly the silly size raoming bill threads are boring and 99.9% of the time it is subscriber error.

For your UK to USA calls, MSE have a call checker that will tell you the cheapest discount phone provider: http://callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/intcallchecker/

    EDIT:
Just had a look and this is the cheapest service that doesn't require registration: just dial 0844 200 9090 and then the USA number you want (either mobile or landline) and it costs 13.1p connection, then 0.51p/min (assuming you have a BT landline).

It's worth clarifying that this is for calls to local mobiles/landlines, not to a UK roaming mobile.

Yeah. Calling a UK mobile even if it is in the US is free. It's the receiving cost of the guy who's in the US. On O2 thats about 40p a min if I remember correctly.

    Edit: Yep 39p a min

As above really. I travel to the US all the time and either use Skype or Facetime (Facetime is unreliable) or get my family to call me in the hotel using the 0844 number above (well, not that actual one, but at 0.5p/minute).

  • Get him to pick up a cheap SIM over there. Calls from a UK landline on many of the discount providers here to either fixed or mobile lines are v cheap (I use 18185, register free, then calls to US fixed and mobile numbers are 5p connection charge then 0.5p/min)
A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove you don't need it.

I concur. Have him get a local payg from virgin, tmobile, AT&T, etc. Then you can call the number quite cheaply from the UK. OTOH, since free WiFi is all over the place in the US, you may want to use skype or something similar.

Facetime can involve small charges to initiate the call. Skype would be better. Even better, try Viber, whose call quality is outstanding.
