  • I was always told "If you wash on New Year's Day, you will wash your luck away". I though it was because women just wanted a break from the drudgery of washing, running it through the mangle and trying to dry it in winter.

My mum (born 1919) and now no longer with us ...sadly, always used to tell me never to wash clothes on New Years Day....as you will 'wash someone out of the family'...meaning a death. :eek:I never wash clothes on this day....call me superstitious......;)

My mum and step mum remind me of this every year ....I think it's rubbish but use this as a good excuse to have a day off washing, drying and putting the clothes away lol:rotfl:......but on the down side...i've now got three loads to do today:mad:
  • I've never heard of that! And we did a bedding wash yesterday too.

Personally I would rather put a wash on than have laundry festering in a laundry hamper but that's just me. :)

(it helps having an OH who is retired so does all the laundry, washing up and hoovering etc... while I go out to work ;) )

I'm all for poo-pooing superstition, but a couple of weeks ago I was behind a hearse and another car. The car in front overtook going up a hill, so I did. My DH told me it was bad luck because someone will die. I've never believed in superstition, and will always walk under ladders for instance (once I've checked there's nobody up there with a bucket!). Later in the day we heard that a friend of ours from many years ago had dropped dead in the street a couple of hours after I'd overtaken the hearse. Obviously just horrible coincidence, but it did make me think :(

I'll wash clothes on any day of the year.

I did 4 loads of washing yesterday so I'm stuffed!
Didn't hang it out to dry though as it rained most of the day.

  • I've had dishtowels hanging out to 'dry' since Thursday. They've been rained on, snowed on, blown half dry, twisted round the rope. But they were washed in the old year - so is this unlucky?

on the plus side I did hoover and tidy on Hogmanay and did nothing yesterday.

I grew up with a super superstitious mum so all this stuff just really irritates me. I haven't even taken our Christmas decorations down yet :-)

I'll come back and report on 31 Dec whether I am a murderer or not.
