    Mortgage-free Glee!
My Mum and Nan also used to say this! Last year I definitely did the washing...and some of you know what a terrible year 2011 was for us! Not a death in the family but it certainly might have been a case of washing away the luck for the year!!
And no, I certainly DON'T believe it! I reckon it was to ensure that at least on one day of the year women didn't have to cope with washing!
I haven't done any washing today - but that's just coincidence!!

Up here in Scotland, there used to be a tradition that your house had to be cleaned before the new year -out with the old (dirt/year) and welcome in the new year. That included doing the washing. As far as i was concerned, that meant all washing done by new year - if it's doing in the rack that's alright! and if you have weans and have a washing load creadted overnight -that's alright as it's newly created!!!!!

  • My gran, god rest her soul, was very superstitious and believed in this. According to my mum, who is sitting next to me, gran used to say it was washing someone away if washing on new years eve (ending of relationships, death of a family member or friend) wash someone in to the family if washing on new years day (birth of a new baby?).

Someone said to me today they couldn't hoover because it was New Years day, good job I'm not superstitious as washing is on and I've just finished running the hoover over.

I'm with Snowy Owl, house has to be cleaned on Hogmany, washing basket/machine/dryer empty, floors cleaned, fresh clean bed linen on, empty sink/dish rack, and empty the dustbin right before the Bells. Fresh start for the year for the whole house! Husband thinks I'm mad. Oh and woe betide anyone who tries to 'First Foot' me that isn't dark haired. Strangely, the rest of the year round I am not in the slightest bit superstitious lol

I never do the laundry on Christmas day or New Years day, not because I'm superstitious but because I deserve two days in the year off! Yesterday I took the decorations down to give the house a good clean and I did the washing so today I've done nothing except make dinner and do the dishes. Back to business as usual tomorrow though. :D

I never do washing on New years day or good friday, my mum passed this superstition on to me and she got it from her mum and no doubt she got it from hers. My husband thinks i'm completely bonkers...but hey i do all the washing anyway so shouldn't matter to him really :P
  • Everyone I knew would have the house spick and span for the new year. Any household rubbish etc. was never thrown out on a new year's day because you might throw good luck out along with it. What was once superstition, eventually turned into tradiition.
