Chattmum - have you read Elizabeth Pantley's book - No Cry Sleep Solution? http://www.amazon.co.uk/No-Cry-Sleep-Solution-Through-Foreword/dp/0071381392/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329091316&sr=8-1
It has a number of different gentle techniques to help little ones to sleep.
I don't know if you have researched the effects on babies of using cry it out - but it raises their cortisol levels and isn't good for their brain or emotional development. I know it's hard when you are tired and your baby won't sleep (mine didn't sleep through til 2 and a half and still doesn't sleep well at nearly three and a half so you have my sympathy) - I didn't use the book by the way - i just figured that she would get there in the end and just supported her through it - I found bed sharing helps us.
But really no-one suggests leaving a baby to cry in the day so that they can learn to self soothe and they can't learn to self soothe until they are much older someone has done it for them and they have experienced being soothed. If they cry and cry and then stop it is because they have learnt that it is pointless because no-one is coming (learned helplessness). Surely that is not what anyone wants to teach a child?
I know this is probably the last thing you want to hear and it is written with the best of intentions I'm sorry but I just couldn't bear not to say something. If I can send you any links or information or help in any way please do get in touch.
Best wishes x0 -
Good morning fellow drivellers.
Well we have been a quiet little bunch this weekend, not much posting going on. Everyone must be hibernating from the cold weather.
Well its raining here and most of the snow has gone now, so it must be warming up a bit, thank goodness.
Am going shopping soon, got to go and have a shower first.
Hope you all have a good day today
Take care

Morning all. Freezing here 11 degres in my bedroom.
FT I don't own my place so I'm not responsible for fixing the boiler or anything. The people that are responsible would rather have someone come out 20 times to repair different parts than put a new boiler in.
Hugs to you Aesop

I find the whole subject about controlled crying controversial. I have my opinions on it
Let me say, DS had a difficult birth, and we spent the first week in hospital when he was born, he was awake every half hour/hour wanting feeding, or cuddling. He couldn't stand the noise of the hospital.
I got an infection after we came home and had to go back to hospital for another week. Oh boy, did he scream and scream, and scream the first night I tried to get him to sleep in their cot bed! I had to hold him, the nurse came him and tried all sorts to get him to stop, in the end I had to leave him crying in the cot bed, as I couldn't stay awake, and he fell asleep, to wake up 3 hours later braying on the cot with his fists and feet. I had to put him in the bed with me to get him to sleep and stay half awake to make sure he was ok.
After we came home, he still wouldn't sleep through the night , up every 2 hours. When we moved house, oh boy! It took me 3 months to get him to sleep in his own room without crying! He missed the sound of hearing us in the same room as him.
It only took him to 3 years old to start sleeping better through the night, ie not waking me up every 2 hours! The first time he slept through the night, I was shocked I had managed a whole night's sleep without being interrupted, I rushed in his room to make sure he was ok!
So Chatmum, do what works for you and hopefully baby will settle soon.0
