Thank you Alias_Omega for the link. The procidure will be like going to the moon for me. May I ask again is it worth repairing or take it to the tip?

Duvarayi - If the brushes are worn, the drum may turn intermittently or you may see the motor trying to turn a little if you have the back of the washing machine removed.

Depending on your model, brushes can be easy or a tricky process to change.

Brushes shouldn't cost more than about £10.

It depends how satisifed you are with your current washing machine and whether you paid a lot for it. Modern machines will have countdown timer displays and other features not to mention more energy efficient.

You may want to have a look in the sales.

As a guide, for someone to have an initial look at your machine could cost anywhere from around £40-£60.

That sounds cheap. You would have laughedif you'd seen how we got the bit to clean at the back. My kids had to do it as I'm stiff as a board and in pain with athritis. I was looking at the sales and saw it's latest version WMUD962 is on sale but ends 2/1/12.

That could be a sign that the bearings are on their way out too!

That model looks like it has quite a few features and an LCD display.

here is how your washing machine works from the time you hit the start button

    1) check if door safety lock is made(safety) if yes go to 2
    2) activate drain pump for a pre-determined time to remove any stale water from the bottom (not all machines do this though)
    3) send power to allocated hot or cold fill valve to allow water into the machine for wash , when filled to pre-determined level go to 4 (level is determined by activation of pressure switch)
4)heat water to predetermined temperature using heater element (temp measured by thermostat) whilst turning drum to agitate water and clothing) when complete go to 5
    5) agitate drum for predetermined time
    6) drain out water (level measured by pressure switch) when complete go to 7
    7) short predetermined timed spin
    8) send power to cold fill water valve to allow rince water in (level determined by pressure sw) when completed go to 9
    9) agitate drum for predetermined time
    10) drain water and spin etc etc

if your door safety switch isn't made the machine will do nothing and appear dead but will have the power light illuminated
if your heater element isnt working the machine will not move on through the programme as the thermostat is waiting for a signal to say it is hot enough to continue
if your filter is blocked the machine may refuse to spin or will begin spinning with some water left in it depending on the model , blocked filter , bad plumbing or a faulty pump will be the usual cause of wet clothes after the spin
spinning the empty drum round with your hands will usually show up any bearing fault , it should be smooth and free spinning , no noises, no wobbling whatsoever (apart from the tension caused by the drive belt) , bearing failure symptoms are usually a grinding or banging noise and will often be accompanied by brown or black "spotting" on the washed items

you can usually spot a stuck bra wire in the drum by putting your head inside the drum and shining a torch dowwnward through the perforations, to remove you need to take off the back panel and remove either the heater element of thermostat , element removal is by disconnecting the wiring and loosening the center nut until it covers the visible thread it is on and pushing inwards on the nut to release it

calgon is a waste of your money despite what so called "experts " tell you

every time you use your machine you run detergent through it and hot water which cleans it (unless your and eco warrior and do everything at 30 deg leaving your clothes full of bacteria) , putting a cleaner through it is wasting your money if you wash at correct temps , all you will clean is the drain pipe and the small hose between the bottom of the drum and the drain pump, nothing else will be cleaned unless you put it in the soap drawer , you can remove the soap drawer and clean it yourself and the chamber it sits in without wasting money on cleaners, if it is clogged up with soap you are using too much powder and need to cut back or your water pressure is low and its not taking all the powder down with it, if you remove the fill hose from the back of your machine you will find a small filter that can be removed with pliers, this sometimes gets clogged with debris and can be cleaned out allowing more water to pass through
if your door seal is going black and mouldy its because you are being a tightwad washing on lower temps, the black mould is bacteria that would be killed if you washed at temps of over 55 deg
washing machines are very simple bits of kit , i spent 10 years fixing them both commercial and domestic models, up until about ten years ago bosch and hotpoint were exactly the same internally , can't comment on modern versions , im sure i have missed loads out but the above should answer most common questions regarding washing machine issues , if it pongs when you open the door its usually either a blocked drain pump or filter so it has residual stale water in the bottom, your drain hose standpipe is too high and the water is syphoning back into the machine or your household plumbing is allowing water to enter the machine when you drain your kitchen sink, if your machine is left full of clothes and water when it goes wrong you can remove the drainhose from the household plumbing and lay it on the floor in a bucket and gravity will syphon the water out , if you need to get it out from under a work surface open the door, grab the top of the drum with your hand and lift the front of the machine slightly then pull it out easily,

if your motor brushes are worn your machine will refuse to turn the drum round but the drum will turn easily by hand, brushes are cheap and easy to fix

always remember to disconnest the electricity please and turn off the water and have a happy new year

kaya thank you for your reply and happy new year to you too.

Having read it, we tried turning the drum by hand and it's not turning. Feels like something is blocking it's way if I am making sense.
