What do you do to disguise the grey?

I have high-lights and low-lights, which work well, although giving a tabby-cat look.
I am probably white at the front, but still dark at the back. keep trying to pluck up the courage to see what my real self is now.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

I die my hair (light ash brown) which turns out a mid-dark brown with no red tones and then add the same colour long extensions, my grey is not even and not a lot either so I'm nowhere near letting it grow through, as we are talking about grey could anyone help with this odd situation, I have recently had a lot of changes in my life and removed a lot of stress and worry from myself, I have noticed that my grey is growing back much more slowly and less of it, instead of dying it every 3/4 weeks when I can see the odd ones coming through I can easily get 2 months before anything appears:D has anyone ever had anything like this happen before? I had a lot of stress when I was in my late 20s and my grey got worse then, it improved once things had been dealt with but I'm 43 now and this seems a bit of a drastic change, sorry OP to hijack:) opinions welcome:)
I would agree that stress does increase growth of grey hairs. It certainly appears to be one of the cases with me. I have had constant stress since late 20's.
My hair has a lot of red tones in it, even before I ever started colouring it. So, I'm suspecting if I were to go lighter, I would initially have to get a professional to do it.
I have tried going lighter, but most people say I don't suit it. I am quite fair skin with light green eyes & dark eyebrows, so maybe the lighter shades wash me out a bit.0 -
Still thinking about going lighter. Just wondering if anyone could recommend a brand which covers well with a decent range of colours.
Was looking at Nice & Easy permanent dye range.
At the moment my hair is dyed darkish auburn brown & am considering going lighter but maybe within the same colour range.
Although, I have been tempted to dye my hair black, but maybe it'll be a bit harsh.0 -
If you want to go lighter, you'll probably have to use a pre-lightener first, then your chosen colour on top. I do mine myself but I wouldn't recommend it, hair's knackered! Let the hairdresser advise.Over futile odds

I don't want to go that much lighter that I would have to use any sort of pre-lightner.0

Hello  Mine's shoulder length with lots of sprinkles of grey: I haven't had it dyed for over a year now due to illness and it's saved me a fortune on dye and really isn't too bad. Some of it's come through is silvery grey and some white: the worse part about growing it was still having old colour on the ends because I really couldn't go to the hairdresser to have it trimmed, so the rest is the auburny colour I started off with, so I have Pollypenny's 'tabby cat' look going on for nada spend! Once I had a trim it looked a lot better so if you decide to grow yours out and you can push through the tabby days, you might find you like it.
You could always try one of those hairstyle sites where you upload a photo and photoshop different styles onto your head, using grey instead of a 'colour' to see whether the grey's likely to suit you or not, before you commit!Stash busting 2014 45 / 60 (balls of yarn)!

Hi
I have been dying my hair for about 8 years now and towards the end of last year I found myself having to touch up the roots every 2-3 weeks. I bought some Andrew Collinge colour shampoo and conditioner when it was on special at superdrug and I was pleased with the results. Only need to touch up about every 6 weeks now.0 -
For roots, goodle "tween" (I think that's what it's called) which is like a cross between a lipstick and a big crayon, you wet it and touch up your hairline to cover re-growth. I got one the other day from amazon and i am really pleased with it0

If you are wanting to neutralise the reds you should use an ash, but be advised, if there is a lot of red, it may still be quite prominent after you have coloured it.
You might want to try a peroxide bath to lift some of the colour off before you dye it, it might not have any effect but its worth a try.
Some colours are more compatible with others, it might be worth a trip to your hairdresser to see what she suggests.
I would think really hard about going black. It is one of the worst colours to change because the colour is so strong.Starting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs
