Its not a closed shop. some are in the union and some arent. only the union steward who represents there members can look at the other scores as this is part of the grevance process so both sides can see its carried out fairly. im not supposed to see the other scores just know that my rep has. its only the same as disaplinary where both sides get to see what is said by the other one.

This is my point and what I feel uncomfortable about, how can the union have right to see the recruitment interview scores of people not in the union or members of another union.

Management have a matrix to score on which they have to go by going on what is said at the interview. they cant mark me down if i answer the questions or it will be obvious they have going off the matrix. they cant say i didnt say stuff if the union is there as a witness so if i get more points than the worst one who got one of the offers they have to give me one of the jobs. its really there fault for not doing it right to start with.

You still won't get the job - you said yourself that they'd already been awarded.
    What outcome are you expecting?

because the grevance process says all documents that are to do with the grevance can be seen to make sure its fair. its the employers rules not the unions so all the others still work for the same employer even if they are not in the union or a different one. all the union are doing is making sure its done fairly. if management had done it fairly to start with the union wopuldnt be able to see any scores because there wouldnt be a grevance.

Yes the offers have gone out but no contracts because the offers have to be accepted first. they are sending out a letter to these to say there is a possible error. if my score is better than the worst one offered a job i should get the job and they shouldnt. its bad luck on there part if that happens but they can blame that on management for not doing there job right.

Well, good luck with that, I can't see much point in giving you any more advice TBA

You seem to come up with a new detail every time someone points out an obvious flaw in your plan/case

I've been interested in this thread. I am a union rep in the public sector. This is my take on it. The employer would usually use a selection matrix of some sorts which is scored to shortlist. The union can look at that matrix (in fact I usually approve the matrix before it is used) Within that matrix there would normally be some weighting against negatives, i.e. if an applicant has excessive sickness or current sanctions against them for misconduct. This matrix would decide who would be interviewed.
There would then be a working matrix used to score the interview, which is a separate thing altogether. At that point you would be scored on the interview only and what happens within that interview, what examples and answers you give etc. At that point any negative cannot be used against you (you would have been ruled out at short list if so)
The reason the union can view those two documents is that even if there are non-members, usually the union is recognised by the employer and therefore negotiates for ALL staff regardless of whether they are members.
I have often been invited to sit in on interviews. I have always, without exception, refused. In my view it is inappropriate. If all of the jobs went to union members, there would be a good case to challenge from the non members! My job is to ensure fairness, not to influence/partake in the interview process!

Got a letter waiting for me at work today saying my interview is later this week. all that about both matrixes is right and what my rep said. my rep is attending to make sure the interview is fair. he wont be involved as in saying anything or helping just there taking notes to make sure what is said is scored right.
  • Hi! i am nelson new here.........
  • Interview went well and i they have offered me one of the jobs. not suprised really as the union rep scored it as well and said theres no way they couldnt offer me a job as some of the other scores were much lower. he thinks the lowest one will get there offer retracted now but at least they will have a job as they were all internal applicants.
