  • As an independent water softener service engineer I recommend that people steer well clear of any softener that has a Culligan valve system on as these softeners are massively unreliable and they charge extortionate prices for spare parts (£35 for a rubber O ring!!).
Also beware of non-electric softeners such as Harvey's or Kinetico. These are good softeners but the upfront costs are very high £1000+, they require block salt which is more expensive than tablet, they claim that because it does not use electricity it will save you money. Most electric softeners these days run on 12V which costs about £5/year so it will take along time to save the money that was paid out in the first place. Finally non-electric softeners say that they only use approx 17litres of water during the regeneration cycle (this is true) but for that 17litres you only get approx. 500litres of softened water. There are electric softeners on the market that can produce upwards of 2000litres of water when only using between 30 - 60 litres of water during regeneration. So you really aren't getting anything extra or money saving from spending out an additional £400 - £500 on a non-electric softener

Thinking of going with the AD11 from SNH Trade as per Doc N's recommendations but I've noticed that they offer 3 versions (one of which is the Combi which is what I need). Plumb Warehouse has the AD11 also but with a free hardness testing kit but they don't mention anything about it being a "combi" version. Can anyone shed some light on the different verisons?

Also I've seen some mention the Atlantis AT210 (possibly salesmen). Same price as the AD11 but with 10 year warranty (although I know you may never need it). Does anyone have the AT210? Unfortunately I can't find any info regarding its salt/water regen usage (per x amount of softened water) or the size of its resin.

I'll porbably go with the AD11 as but curuios to find out about the combi version.
  • I've just stumbled across this thread while searching for info. on another subject.
We had a Tapworks softener installed three years ago, and, as well as all the obvious benefits already covered here, the eczema that I have suffered with all my life has completely cleared up.
I wish we'd had it installed sooner.
I can't recommend softeners highly enough, especially if, like us, you live in a very hard water area.

I know nothing about the AT210, I'm afraid, but I do know a little about Tapworks (purely as a happy customer).

I can't see from the Tapworks website that the AD11 comes in anything more than one version, though. My guess is that SNH are just selling the same thing with different descriptions to appeal to different customers, but I could easily be wrong.

I'd give them a ring to check - I found them very helpful when I dealt with them.
  • Dear All

Having trawled through this thread and done further reading on the web, I'm still confused :(. Does anyone have any experience with

    threesixtyplumbing.co.uk/ecosoft-water-conditioner

I appreciate that it is a conditioner and not a softener.

They have sent me some test results which appears to be positive but I'm don't really understand how it works.

I am also interested in this. This comparison page (titled why ecosoft) looks interesting, wonder what others think?
  • anyone got any experience with scale master water softeners? I know someone who has had it installed for 5 years with no issues?

    http://scalemaster.co.uk/products/water-softeners/softline/

I have a 5 bedroom house with 3 bathrooms and 6 people with 2 children.

any recommendations as to which softener to go for? I am looking for a non electric one plus one that takes tablet salt not block.

    Thanks

I am currently looking at EW Technologies system. They have a half price offer on at the moment and are very friendly over the phone. They mentioned that they don't charge any extra for the installation and the two prices i was given was £499 for thier stanadard unit and £630 for a metered system. Has anyone any experience with this company. Reviews on website look quite good

As I said in my previous post, I am an independent water softener service engineer so hopefully I can shed some light on this. The Atlantis AT210 softeners are very good, in fact this is the softener I have installed in my own property. It uses 60 litres of water per regen and this produces approx 2400 litres of softened water at a hardness of 21 degrees clarke. This is pretty efficient and has also been very reliable.
I have yet to have experience of Atlantis' latest model, the AT350, that comes with the same guarantee and produces the same amount of softened water but apparently uses half the amount of water per regen as the AT210. If this is the case I would say it is probably the most efficient salt using water softener out on the market today.

My machine is nearly twenty years old and still appears to be working efficiently. It has never had a fault. Is there anything that needs to be done chemically or otherwise with the resin sack?
