Simple answer - Kinetico fine if you've money to burn.
Check out Tapworks - see above.

Just checked them out, unfortunately the Tapworks Ultra 9 won't fit, its too high. Though I'm looking into cutting away the base of the cupboard to shoehorn it in.

The Monarch Midi is also too high, but if I can get away with cutting into the base, will also be fine.

The only one that so far looks ok to go in unhindered is the Kinetico, but at almost triple the price, and more for salt, its a last resort.

Assuming I get the extra height, you prefer the Tapworks Ultra 9 to the Monarch Midi?

If anyone is interested or has any questions......

I recently had an "EWT Gold 500" installed for £499. Its a timer based system and also included an installed water filter in the price.
I was offered a metered system for £620 but declined.

So far i am very happy but it is my first water softener so have nothing to compare to.

Installation was very efficient and took approx 3.5 hrs. The fitter seemed very experienced.

I had seen numerous promotional adverts for EWT in the metro newspaper and on groupon. I was very sceptical as i knew nothing of them. After learning that a friend of my sister and other members of his family had used them approximately a year ago, i finally decided to the plunge.

Anyway just in case there are any others out there interested, feel free to ask me any questions. They do also do a "refer a friend scheme" where i would get some £50 cashback and the buyer £50 off their order. PM me if interested.

Thanks - are Coral well respected?

It's a water softener - there isn't a lot to them, one if the main components are the valve. Autotrol ones seem to be one of the better ones if not the best.

All the details you need are discussed on this thread let alone the rest if the forum.

    Best of luck
  • I have replaced with a Wrekin ECO15. .......

Just an update after several months use: The Wrekin softener is superb. Nice clean, fairly low profile unit, easy access to refill with salt. Rgenerates overnight according to use (quieter, faster than the previous Waterside). Previously I could detect the water getting harder as recyle day approached, but now the water is very soft always.

    Fully recommended.

want to buy a softener: small family of 3 unvented tank 15mm feed. ive looked at 10l models and they seem to use almost the same amount of salt and regen water as a 15l. so my question is is it worth to get a bigger unit to save on the above over time?

if so I think ive narrowed it down to a coral 15 premier or a Wrekin eco15. my question is, on the coral premier its £100 than the coral 15 water save, but seems to use the same valve. the only difference I can see is it has a mesh in the resin tank. who makes coral?

p.s. we live in Boston lincs, where the water is well ard.

decided to buy a Coral 15 Premier from fountain. the chap on the phone was very helpful and explained the fine mesh resin is basically a smaller bead, thus achieving a greater surface area. this should mean less regens so less salt and water.

he also explained the advantage of having a Autotrol valve, in that I can get spares from anywhere that stocks that valve, whereas the tapworks I was looking at would need parts from tapworks.
  • Just had a company called round to talk water softeners. This company sells the Kinetico 2020c twin at £1200, or a Kennet single cylinder electric for £500. Has anyone got a Kennet water softener or know much about them?
  • I put a spreadsheet together to work out 5 / 10 / 15 year costs and the Wrekin ECO Ultra comes out top, primarily from it's low salt usage (we are not metered so I ignored water costs), so I've bought one. Paul at Wrekin is very helpful and can explain why it is so good.
Base cost is £630 including the 22mm fitting kit.
Not installed yet so I can't comment on how well it works and long term costs. I'll try to come back in six months...

Ten years ago when I brought my house my mum had a new kitchen put in hers with a water softener , ten years on I have spent approx £20 on de scaler for my kettle and coffee machine whilst she has gone through two washing machines , one dishwasher and god only knows how many hundreds of kilos of salt and fuel and time going to get it. The failures on her equipment were not due to lime scale or caused by the softener in any way but hopefully the enlightened amongst you will get the point of my post. I did ten years commercial catering equipment and ten years domestic in which time I can honestly say apart from water boilers for tea and coffee in commercial kitchens I have not witnessed any real damage caused by scale build up ever. It's just like calgon or dishwasher tablets that contain "salt" , a complete waste of your time, effort and money
