One reason for staying at Flamingo, Ballys Harrahs etc is the lower limits on the tables and then also being central on the strip.

Stoneman I agree about some of your suggestions being better rooms but along with those rooms comes higher limits on the tables, and higher food costs

I have also stayed at Pallazzo, Wynn and Cosmo but I wouldnt go back to any of them, I loved the rooms but hated the casinos.

Nothing wrong with MGM apart from its huge and they never have the room available that I have requested (3 times) and again its very hard to find lower limit table games there

That is why I usually suggest cheaper option ( as most people ask for cheaper options) and central, or cheaper option off strip, Orleans after all the site is called Moneysavingexpert

I also like Stratosphere again for the casino

I think you prob get that I prefer the lower limit casinos :D as an example I stayed at Mirage last year for a change, the room was graet but I walked over the road and played cards each night at Harrahs

If I was a high roller I would prob stay at Wynn or Pallazzo

just to add one of my fav casinos is Bills

So I guess it depends why you're going :)

First trip wasn't really about the gambling but just the experience. I know I've said it here recently before, but for a first time hotel you can't beat a pyramid room in the luxor. No where else that I know of can you walk out of your room at the top of a pyramid and look down x amount of floors at the ground below :)

And it's cheap even with resort fees. Mix it up with a few days at a posh hotel before you go home and that's what it's all about :)

No stoneman you weren't -but my answer WAS tailored to the poster's particular questions.

All first timers are NOT the same -some want to walk miles exploring -others want it all on their doorstep and not go far at all. I doubt I'd have returned to Vegas had I stayed North strip first visit .

I maintain the Wynn is too far North for a lot of people -for others (especially with a bigger budget) it's fine.

Sounds like we match your idea of first trippers, can't imagine us doing hardly any gambling, just sight seeing, taking in a show, drinking and eating out.

We are splitting our holiday, with a posh hotel at the end, starting with 4 nights in a 4* (hopefully) for around £45 per night (Ballys?) and then I was looking at something like Cosmo as the posh option for around £125 per night - does this seem doable? and is the Cosmo a suitable choice for a couple who aren't looking at the casino areas or swimming pools as a priority?

For us, they're probably a bit close to be honest for a first time - we picked opposite ends of the strip (but we'd booked for 16 nights I think?) which gave us scope to make the most of the areas we were in (Luxor Pyramid Room and TI Petit Suite were the specific hotels / rooms we stayed in).

However we're likely to do Cosmo --> Platinum --> Luxor next time we go so who am I to talk as they're bunched around the same area :D

For budget though, Bally's is probably a good choice and Cosmo would definitely be a posh option I would say :)

I meant to say before (I was running out of battery on my phone), there's obviously a lot more to Luxor than walking out of your room at the top of the atrium - but that was quite cool and memorable :)

definitely worth checking out the Titanic exhibition in there... i'm not the biggest history fan, but it was really interesting. most of the free magazines/what's on guides have a discount voucher for entry.
