Well ive gained 2 kittens

Evening all
The week before christmas my hubby went into the shed to get out the christmas lights and came out holding 2 kittens. They were cold, dirty and smelly and Mum was nowhere to be seen. We have left down food incase Mum comes back and she hasnt. I hope where ever she is she knows her pair of kittens and warm safe and well and should she pop back so shall she.
I have been in touch with the RSPCA, CPL and Animal trust and they couldnt take them. The Animal Trust may help us in the new year with the cost of vaccinations.
Now we have 2 six year old cats who to be fair have been very tolerant of the kitties my 2 older children have bonded and named them so it looks like there stopping:T
As we didnt know they were coming so to speak we havent really the money for jabs so if possible will take up the Animal Trusts offer. What worrying me though is insurance which im a firm beliver in. The older 2 are with petinsurance.co.uk which I think is E&L which from my research today don't seem to enjoy paying out. Both of my older cats have been insured from day one with them and weve never claimed. They do have there for life policy which costs about 6 pounds a cat per lunor month. The kittens would cost about the same.
While looking at Esure and also Tesco they seamed cheaper but I dont believe they are for life policies.
We really would have put some money by for this sort of thing had we have known what santa was going to bring us this year. So on the look of it what looks the better policy please Tesco or Esure? id be happy to take all 4 cats over to them or should I stick with whom im already with? I think its the reading of them not being helpful with claims that got me worried.
The vets wants £54pet cat for jabs or £84 with microchipping:eek:
Mad Mum to 3 wonderful children, 2 foster kittens and 2 big fat cats that never made it to a new home!
Aiming to loose 56 pounds this year. Total to date 44.5 pounds 12.5 to go. Slimming World Rocks!

  • Congratulations, I cant help on the insurance side as I tend not to insure cats, i just put money aside each month into my savings. With regards to vaccs and microchip that sounds alot. You should shop around, I called 4 vets and they were all different. Pets at Home do cheap microchips and think their vaccs are quite reasonable, the cats protection league may be able to help out if you explain the circumstances.
  • This thread is useless without kittenpics. Apologies that I have nothing sensible to contribute.

Microchipping during neutering often works out quite well in terms of cost. The vaccinations sound about right but another £30 on top for microchipping is an awful lot, I don't think neutering would add on that much.

As for insurance I don't know what to advise. Going on the net and looking at reviews will always produce people who say they don't pay out etc etc. Have you looked at reviews for the other 2 and how do they generally read/compare? Although having said that E&L so seem to have a worse reputation than the others!

    Congratulations by the way :D

I've just insured my three cats with MoreThan through Quidco. It cost between £5.50 and £6.60 per month (for some reason the younger ones were a bit more than the oldest this time) but I get £40 cashback through Quidco. Not sure if they offer exactly what you want, but may be worth a look.

Ooh and we definitely need pics - I have kitten fever at the moment :D

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy.

Also there have been some withdrawals from the market lately (Halifax, left alot of people high and dry with pets who had problems they can now not insure anywhere else) so try and look at someone who has insurance or pets as their mainstay of business, and look into the underwriter as well.

My bank HSBC withdrew their perfect policy (luckily I had no prior claims so no exclusions for other companies) 2 years ago, and I had to look around for a new one. I printed full policy documents and went through them with a fine tooth comb to check everything out, then phoned up the compaines with any questions I had- and I was so impressed with the service from Axa (who are both insurer and underwriter) I opted for them. I pay £9.41 pm for my 6 year old cat and that is for genuine lifetime cover- I get a very generous x amount per condtion every year.

Or names. We need names, too.

After all, what do you call kittens that obviously fell out of Santa's Sleigh?
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

  • Awwwww congratulations! So glad they ended up in your shed:D - and I can totally understand about not having money put aside as they weren't planned!

    Pics needed ....:D

Re insurance, I would advise moving both your current 2 away from E&L asap (they are a nightmare & yes, I've experience of them unfortuantely when I didn't know any better!).

PetPlan is considered the best by many but is expensive.
Argos seems to get good reports from people who've had to claim.
Morethan again seems to get good reviews but not tried them.

The most important thing is to get a "for life" policy - preferably one with a set amount you can claim each year (some offer say £7k over the life of the policy, wihch can be quickly used up should you have an ongoing condition)

The other thing to watch is (and this will be more important for the older cats just now) is that some companies impose a % of total cost + excess once the animal reaches a certain age.

This can make a huge difference eg £1k claim, excess £75 but add on a 20% fee and it suddenly jumps to £275!

Do a couple of quotes and if you're not sure, post back.
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!
  • I will do some more quotes later and if someone can tell me how to post pics id be delighted. Weve a big ginger kitten called George from Peppa Pig
and a smaller still needing lots of TLC torti girl called Bella. These guys have had a rough start so deserve the best now. My older two are Bingo and Kayto two rather chubby long and short haired domestics whom sort of live on the sofa oh and eat lots

Lol, well you are in for a treat. My aunty got 2 kittens after having big fat (inactive) moggies who reached the ages of 17 & 18. Let's just say she had no idea what to expect and got quite a shock suddenly having kittens running round the place :p It's taken her about 2 years to stop calling them naughty- they were never naughty, just normal kitten mischeif!
    :T

Mine on the other hand may be 6 1/2 but good lord she is into everything right now!
