Shame the fabias off the list - the 1.4 tdi was going to be my suggestion over everything in that list. They genuinely return over 60mpg, we ran one for 50k mmiles and it performed faultlessly.
On your list, the Jazz or the fiesta, but then I'm not sure what the question is.0 -
Toyota IQ! brilliant little car - it's bigger than expected plus no road tax and no congestion charge.
You could get it at around 5k if you put some effort in searching.
Couldn't recommend it more :-)
However the 1 litre isn't suitable for motorway driving really. It has long gear ratios (too long imo), you have to really work the box to get it moving. The 1.33 I have is better on the motorway, and 2nd gear between 35 and 70 will leave most 1.6l petrol and 2.0 diesel salesman cars in your wake. Won't get anywhere near 60mpg mind, even with granny driving....
I'd have the swift out of all them. Won't get you 60mpg, but you'll have a lot more fun driving it that a fiesta.
Never driven the colt, but heard good things about it too.0 -
Umm ... you want 15k/year for next 10 years out of a car, with an mpg of 60-ish?
And THEN say " I'm not really biased towards any manufactuer, or country" , and "so nothing is out because it's French, or in because it's Japanese" ?
Ever read J D Power or the likes of Parkers?
Oh dear.:rotfl:
ANYWAY, those thoughts aside - here's a vote for the Honda Jazz.
Not the best to drive, nor the most fun.
Not 60 mpg either!
BUT .... ultra-reliable in my experience; almost 10 years with mine & used for all sorts, it's (in almost 10 years) only just needed its first exhaust and apart from battery last year and regular tyres/consumables, nothing! Never missed a beat.
Though it IS starting to age .... it's carried 10' lengths of timber/pipe; doors; tonnes of tiles/sand/cement; carried a family of five PLUS LUGGAGE (okay you have to plan) .... but , in a word, BRILLIANT!
As an asside, ours is now getting tired & due (we feel) for a change; we'd LOVE another BUT economics ......
Fiesta diesel! (Newer model)
Lower running costs (in theory).
Less tax.
More m.p.g.
Hope that's helpful.0 -

We've got french cars that are 20 and 15 years old.
What engine do you have in the Jazz, and what the mpg like?0 -
"Sense you make not." ???
Well "...gypsy", if it were MY money, I would be researching into reliability issues and other information regarding my prospective purchase.
As most of us tend to do with a major purchase.
No?
And for automobiles (Sorry for the "Americanism"), a good starting point may well be JD Powers or Parkers.
I'm sorry if my post was confusing; it was meant to be helpful.0 -
I've worked for car manufacturers. They're are much the same tbh. Perception and spin are the main difference. I'd be happy with any on the list above, (but we've dropped the Matiz).
If the economy of the Honda isn't as good though, we probably wouldn't put it up the list.0 -

.
To be honest it's very difficult with a second hand car. You can find out what problems they're known for having but it doesn't mean they will have it or have already had it and had it rectified. It's also a gamble on what else is going to happen on that car rather than the specific model.
At 15k a year / 150k for the duration of ownership, it's going to go through pretty much every major change while Mikey owns it...0
