Thanks all for the information. I've called a local electrician who will visit my property on Friday morning.

I'll report back on his inspection

I had an electrician in my house this morning and confirmed what the British Gas Engineer said that there is NO EARTHING in my house. But they is bonding on my water pipe. His reading was 12.94 (I don't know what it means)

He said it's best for EDF Energy to do the PME Earthing for me. He said they can do it for me for free depending on who I speak to on the phone.

Does anyone one know what technique I should use to get the PME Earthing free from EDF? My electricity supplier is also EDF
  • 12.94 is the results for which test? Im an electrician myself so im a tad confused because if their is no earthing in your house whatsoever, where exactly did he get those results from?

Well, he brought an equipment from his case and plugged it in the wall socket and showed my the figure 12.94 and said in an well earthed house it's around 1 to 2.

I'm confused as well, but he said they is no earthing and he didn't charge him or request to do the work.

Yeah he is right, i was thinking of something else. Ok as for the PME earthing, forget EDF, contact the nearest National Grid office (DNO) in your area, they will fit it for free depending on the supply head (the bit where the cables go into your house).

Because your in the south east, then your covered by UK power networks and because you need an alteration to an existing supply you need this number:
    0845 234 0040 - select option 3

London Power Networks is your DNO for that postcode (Dartford).

Other posts have answered that question. If available it is well worth installing (even if there is a fee). Note that you must first provide compliant main equipotential bonding to your incoming water and/or gas services and a compliant earth connection to your consumer unit.

Later edit: just a caution that the DNO may expect "compliance" as mentioned above to be demonstrated by a test certificate issued by an approved contractor.

Just to clarify, is your incoming supply fed from overhead power lines?

I have come across a problem like this, without getting technical on the different types of source supplies, whereby an earth stake into the ground is all that is required due to the source and type of feed to the properties!
