Earthing needed for my house

bg use a socket and see earth loop impedence tester, it will simply point out that your earth path is insufficient (probably >200 ohms). If so you will have been advised to get it investigated by an electrician to advise you further.0

Its also worth remembering that, much as Gas Safety Regulations, electrical regulations are not retrospective in all cases, but advisory that defects are not to current standards/regulation!Signature removed0

if its the old earth it would just be green or a bare twisted wire.

Ooooops a naughty typo and I'm not colour blind either,
if its the old earth it would just be green or a bare twisted wire.
Correct, teach me not to rush and proof read my posts before pushing the button.

Our house (1930s) was identified by an electrician as missing an earth bonding to the meter while doing some unrelated work.
UK Power networks came to fix it for free and at the same time replace the tails from the supply to the meter.
Might be worth contacting them first to see if it is their responsibility and if they will carry it out for free.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
Neither earthing nor supplementary bonding is anything to do with the supplier or DNO-it's the responsibility of the owner of the property. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Neither earthing nor supplementary bonding is anything to do with the supplier or DNO-...
Many properties will have a DNO provided earth, often PME. Occasionally PME is not connected but is available FOC, or for a modest fee, well worth paying for the reliable low impedance earth connection PME provides. So worth asking about.
However the householder must bring main equipotential bonding into compliance first.0 -
My point was that maintenance is not a function of the DNO, they won't check the earthing system unless the householder involves them, or unless a meter reader spotted an obvious hazard. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

In all likelihood, what you need is main equipotential bonding to the gaspipe ( and probably to the waterpipe ), not earth to your house.
The price will depend on how far your gasmeter and fuseboard are apart, and how much work it is to run a cable between the two. It is one of the most important safety features of an electrical installation.0 -
I was advised there was no earth to my lights. The engineer advised me depending on where the nearest connection was it could be a small or large job. In the meantime I was advised only to have plastic covers on my light switches. My house is 1920 and was rewired by previous owner late 60's early 70's. For the moment I will just make sure no metal fitments are fitted.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0
