The Giving Up/ Cutting Down alcohol support thread - number 11

  • Crazymum thanks so much for asking, I've had a bit of a rough few weeks but I'm just coming out of that now - onwards and upwards, and the absolute best thing for me at the moment is to not be drinking!

I'm currently on 28 Afds and I'm hoping to make this 30 by the end of the month! I'm really pleased with this as it's probably the longest I have been AF since I was about 16 or so! This thread really helps no end - in some weird way I feel like I would be letting everyone down if I relapsed now, so it's a real incentive to keep it up :) it's also been a big help that my partner has decided to cut down a lot anyway (mainly for new years resolution diet reasons, but whatever!) and so there hasn't been so much temptation recently! I still have some booze left over in the house from new years, and just personally for me, it's important that I can have it in the house without drinking it all in one go, which is what I would've done a month ago!

My ambition is to have a nice drinks cabinet/wine rack full for when people come around for dinner etc, but to have the self control to restrain myself when left to my own devices! I haven't previously trusted myself to do this, but that's my goal - probably sounds a bit silly but there we go!

Big congrats and good luck to those trying to stop smoking! (booze and fags at the same time - you deserve a medal :p) I quit about 4 months ago and I haven't looked back :) It's probably about the best thing you can do for your body :)
  • I'd also like to set a target of 25 afds for February please shaggy :)

I lost 3 stone 2 yers ago, sadly it's keeping it off that's the problem.:rotfl:

Yep, I know that one - got down to 3st below my heaviest then last year put over 1.5 stones back on .

I know how it feels to have ALOT to lose. In the past 12 months i have lost just over 4 stone, i have half stone to go til i get to goal weight. Slow and steady wins the race Lizzy! Good luck. By cutting down on the booze you will notice a difference on the scales:)

Well done for the 4 stones. And PB for your 3 too. Slow and steady is doing it for me now. TBH I thought the loss would be quicker because of not drinking, but I didn't eat as much then as I do now. Prefer it this way though. I've got between 3 and 4 stones to lose from here - haven't decided on a final target yet but definitely won't be too low as I'm no spring chicken :D

Still think those who are cutting down on alcohol and stopping smoking are the big hitters - I doubt I could do both of those together! Thank goodness I stopped smoking years ago.

20 AFD in January to date Shaggy, thanks.

And target is now decided for February - 29 AFD - gulp!

The problem for me is not how many days I drink but how much I drink when I start.

So I have 2 very social meets planned in Feb and my aim is to drink less than a bottle of wine on each occasion.

The rest of the month I will stick to my usual rules.

That was part of my problem.
When I put alcohol in my body, I didn't know if I would stop after 2 drinks or 22 drinks. All bets were off.
I want the 2nd drink more than the 1st, the 7th more than the 6th, etc

So I can not drink any alcohol safely.
Thus I need to not drink any alcohol, and stopping me picking up the first drink is the other part of the problem.

However, I can manage that one day at a time if I get help

    Good luck

What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.

I'm a different type. I'd happily drink a small(ish) amount everday. So I could easily drink 4/5 units every day making 28 to 35 units a week! Not healthy. But I don't really like drinking too much - mostly alcohol makes me feel sleepy and I don't really like the feeling of being drunk....

Mari I think alcohol is really expensive these days - I guess that is a good thing if it helps us drink within healthy limits..
