Last night I ordered this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1851687874 on the subject.
This is another book on the subject that is worth a read. I got it a couple of years back and re read it from time to time. I'll be interested to hear back from people if they give it a go.0 -
It's all about knowing your priorities, deciding what is important to you. If you like clubbing with mates, and eating out, and playing computer games, and watch hours of Sky tv, then so be it. All those activitiies are not good for your health, or your wallet.
Ilona
Everything in moderation! I don't see why clubbing with mates isn't good for your health? You don't HAVE to drink alcohol when you go out. Likewise eating out, tv, or computer games, in moderation, shouldn't be harmful to your health
For me, going out socialising when I feel able to IS good for my health, and my CPN strongly encourages me to do it. And going to rock clubs is something I really enjoy:)0 -

I am glad you are enjoying your life.

Thanks Ilona - I wouldn't say I generally enjoy life but when I feel able to do those things, I do enjoy it (usually it's the thought of going out that's the problem, once I'm out it's ok!) But it DOES hit the wallet as you say and can only be done occasionally0 -
If you were doing this to save money, you might manage it for a year. There's such a difference in denying yourself pleasure and convenience so you can have a holiday, pay off a debt, buy a house, donate to charity, whatever, or doing it because it's actually your only option. It's what I hate about the annual "I'm a rich journalist and I'm going to live on minimum wage/JSA for a week/month" thing. If you're choosing to do it, it feels so, so different.
I wouldn't ever voluntarily do this, though! Little treats here and there are worth so much more than money in the bank. They change your life from surviving to living. I scrimp and save for the purpose of affording them! Of course it's sensible to cut back on things that don't really increase your quality of life, but if it does then don't cut it out unless you have to - because tomorrow that may well be the case!0 -

Same here - I've cut back on groceries, which hasn't had any detrimental effect (the opposite in fact!) so I can afford, eg, a cheap DVD player, which we haven't had for years - and I'd rather have that than £25 in the bank:)0 -
It is possible, but you need to find free leisure time activites and treats. So, saving vouchers for a day out. Walking instead of going to the gym. No buying ready made coffee or cafe food. Borrow books from the library. This is pretty much how I live anyway, being on a low income. Might give the idea a go for the whole year. Sounds like an exciting challenge.0

I did this the begining of this year for three months. It was hard I have to say. It meant though that I used everything. I bought the hairspray and such on offer on the run up to Christmas and then with the exception of the utility bills, fuel for the car and food the rest was put to one side. When the bill hit in March for the insurance on both cars, Service and replacement break pads on one car, tax and MOT the money was there to clear it outright. I will have to do this again as of January as I lapsed totally after April!
This time round I shall do more Ebay stuff and probably the odd car boot where I can in the better Spring/Summer months. I have said previously I need to get up in the loft and get that sorted out. Clothing wise I am okay so in reality I just don't need to buy anything just look after what I currently have.Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

omg they even got the cheek to ask you to pay P and P :rotfl:0 -
The more I read, the more I am tempted to give it a go, at least for the first 3 months of the year. I think it will be good also to have a bit of space and use things up for once! I will stay out of the shops so I don't see things I might then want though!!
I can't afford to buy things while I'm looking for a new job so would be a good time to do it. Plus I have plenty of food in stock to keep me going for 3 months apart from a few fresh bits.0
