Changed from AOL to BT and not happy

We changed from AOL to BT about nine months ago and have found the 10GB limit the worst thing about BT's service so far.

They do not charge you for the first month you go over the limit. I have just gone over the limit for the second time (the first time was a few months ago) so I am expecting a charge. Because we had family over for Christmas it's going to be about 17gb this month!

I think BB for £5 a month in a non LLU exchange with £10 a month rental is good but I will certainly look for an better download limit next time.

Why go from AOL (big american crappy company) to BT (big british crappy company). Makes no sense.

Some would have questioned you moving to Sky. But I've had no troubles with Sky and get pretty good speeds. I download over 400 - 500GB a month with no issues, no usage policy etc.

A friend is on TalkTalk hes very happy with them, but another questionable company when i comes to complaints, along with Sky, this is because they have so many customers they're bound to get more complaints.

That's got nothing to do with BT's 'service' and everything to do with you picking the wrong package.....

There's two other available packages which give you more than 10Gb a month. Why didn't you choose one of them?

I can only speak well of AOL. I have been with them for 7 years since I first had a computer.
Twice I have thought of leaving but when I called them they offered me such a good deal I have stayed.
Recently I had thought of moving to BT but they told me that International calls cost 20p per minute but I could pay £5 per month to include them. I called AOL to ask how much their International calls were costing me and after holding on I was offered Broadband plus local and national calls for £5.40 and for 6 months International calls would be free. I had been paying £7.20 prior to this. They charge £7.40 for international but I would not do this rather pay for the calls when I made them. Reckon I pay about 4p per minute. I have never had a problem with AOL so stayed where I was.

The deal I was offered was £5 per month for 18 months against the standard £17 odd a month which is not bad for a non LLU exchange!

I didn't have the option but if I had it would have cost a lot more. The 10GB download limit is a hassle but cost wise I will not get a better deal for a non LLU exchange.

Just a quick update - and thanks for all the replies.
My first month with BT (December) ended with my download quloat at 10.07GB, so under their rules, I will not get charged for going over this month. However, after going on to "My BT" and having a look at the Broadband section, I honestly cannot see how I have used this much.
Also, forgive me for being a bit cynical but I have gone over my "allowance" by .07GB, so is this just a ploy to get me to upgrade?

Im pretty sure if it was a ploy then it would have been better for them to show you as further over than just .07GB

Do you use iplayer ? or Radio online ? Skype?

Try installing the following on each computer that accesses your internet so you can track where all the usage is coming from .

Is your router secured with a wireless key, perhaps your neighbour is using your WiFI

Thanks for the extra suggestions. Unfortunately the answer does not lie with any of these, as we do not have a wireless connection, just the one PC is connected to the internet, no use of either iplayer or Skype.
The missus does however use some radio online, but that is very rare, probably only a couple of hours each weekend.

If you install the software above at least you can keep an eye on your current limit and see if anything you are doing on line affects your usage

There is speculation that BTs usage monitor is inaccurate for new connections. See http://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/BT-Broadband-Usage-monitor-LIES/td-p/318463
I haven't read the whole thread, but installing another meter as a comparison would make sense for a month or two at least.
I imagine you will be keeping a very close eye on it this month, as will I, in case it is a serious problem.
