Changed from AOL to BT and not happy

I chan ged over from AOL (as ISP) tp BT at the end of November, because I was assured that it was going to be a lot cheaper for me, and that there were no hidden costs .
Anyway, I got an email from BT yesterday telling me that I have used up 7GB of my 10GB limit for December and would I like to upgrade to another package, otherwise I could be charged at £5 for every lot of 5GB I go over my limit?
I am confused and more than a little ticked off, because when I agreed to the package I was told that there was unlimited access to my broadband (as with AOL), and why would I agree to something which is more expensive?
Has anyone experienced this?
As a further note, neither of us download films, music or pictures, so why would we have used up 7GB of download, could it be when I downloaded a Malwarebytes software, or is it the updating for Norton, Photoshop and Windows which are using up this "allowance"?

Updating things will use the allowance - its downloading, so if they were big updates they will eat into your allowance a little. Malwarebytes will have used some too, although its a relatively small program - do you stream anything such as Iplayer or Youtube, or use online music services?

You need to work out what is using your allowance in order to stop it from causing you to exceed your limit - and then look through any paperwork you have regarding unlimited or 10gb. Who assured you it would be cheaper?

If you've used 7GB so far this month, with only two days to go until a new month starts, I'd say that's ok and you haven't got anything to worry about with regards to your 10GB allowance if this is your 'normal' usage level.

I understand you are miffed as you thought it was unlimited though; do you have anything in writing where BT state that is what was offered to you?

Not much help, but it sounds like your usage is similar to mine.
I've done nothing of note this month, just surfing and the odd youtube video and I'm up to 8.5GB according to BTs meter, so 10GB will be eaten up really easily.
You should have been sent numerous emails by BT when you signed up confirming the package. Check them for any discrepancies before phoning them to complain.

For what it's worth, I'm disappointed with BTs deals this year, but I have very few options on my exchange.

BT Broadband comes with one of three limits:

• Option 1 10GB/month
• Option 2 40GB/month
• Option 3 unlimited

Unfortunately, the amazing deals that BT offers usually only include Option 1, and they bury the 10GB limit deep in the small print.


If you were really mis-sold the package, then phone BT and insist that they review the recording of the conversation that you had with their sales person. You may be able to get the contract cancelled, or a better deal on the package you need.

AOL broadband is actually improved very much over the last few years.

I have the 10 GB option with BT.
Both my husband & myself have a laptop which we use for general surfing, emails occasional youtube videos & husband plays pool or snooker (don't know which!) & our usage this month with 2 days to go is 2.93GB & this is normal.

You can keep a check on your usage by logging on to mybt.com.
Then click on "My Services"
Then click on green broadband icon on left hand side
Near bottom of next page click on "View your broadband usage"

Maybe then you can find out what is using so much.

Thanks Andrew, it seems that we are in similar situations. I do watch the odd Youtube videos (as does the missus - music mostly). I may have to update to the 40GB version, which I was assured by the guy at BT with a Liverpool accent, would only be required for someone who downloads films and music, and does online gaming (none of which applies to us).

Because my experience of AOL was pretty bad of late. I think that people can only relate to their own experiences.
