Cheers for the response, i do feel as though the bank think i am lying as they said the tills tallied, I cant believe i walked away without asking for it to be counted but eh ho.
If i have time tomorrow I'll call in to see what's happening. I'm not getting my hopes up but, if i don't get the £20 back i'll have no choice but to put a written complaint in about the teller and move banks. After all it could have been £120 short.
Do i have the right to ask for the tellers name so i could put it in writing?

You do not need the cashier's name. That will be recorded on the bank's system, so they will be able to find who performed the transaction.

It's not really the cashiers fault but the managers decision - after all the tills did balance. If your money was actually short it was probably just a mistake, it's unlikely a cashier would risk their job for £20 with far more available to them! So I don't see why you would try and accuse the cashier, seems a bit nasty to me.

Some banks do just weigh the cash - the scales are incredibly accurate but we are all entitled to request them to count this out in front of us. I have however not heard of a bank which didn't use the £1000 pound bundles.

I also think your best bet would just be to go into the bank when you can and speak to the manager, for that amount if you just state your case (and not accuse the cashier of theft) they will probably just give you the £20 as it is a one off. If not you can take it further, I do think you have a good chance of getting the money back.

I'm not trying to blame the cashier, all i know is that i was £20 short, it was in no way my fault and the cashier did put money back in the drawer after weighing it a few times. The scales could need recalibrating or something.
I just thought that if i was going to put it in writing i would need the name of the person that served me, just like you would when complaining about any service you would receive from anywhere else.
They did use bundles, £500 came out of the drawer and it was all on and off the scales a few times before cash was taken off and put back in the drawer.
I totally agree £20 isn't worth anyone's job, i just cant let this go, after all its money i have earned.

Well they do it with coins

I know - I do it with coins at my work, but I always count notes out to customers. Coins are heavy, one coin out and you can clearly see a bag is over or under - I wouldn't be so sure with notes.

Was the money not banded into £1000 pound bundles? These are already pre-counted and double checked.
And can still be wrong. I got an extra £20 in a bundle last time I made a large withdrawal. This was in a £1000 bundle in a sealed bag.

Mistakes can and do happen. It could even be your mistake. But such mistakes are rare.

It's not personal. It's not something that requires you to move banks. It doesn't need a witch-hunt against the cashier.

At some point in the chain of movement of the cash, from deivery / deposit to float to till etc I would expect it to have been counted as opposed to weighed.

It's possible that procedures haven't been followed. It's possible that a machine has miscounted. It's possible that a human being has miscounted.

It's possible that somebody in a distant cash handling centre has helped themselves to £20. It's possible a member of staff in the branch has. More likely there's another wad of cash with £20 more in it than it should have.

You raise the issue with the branch. If you are absolutely sure you haven't made a mistake yourself (which is just as possible as any of the other reasons above) you stand your ground and ask them for reimbursement of the money as a goodwill payment. I would expect you to get this as it's not worth the time investigating it any further.

If that is the outcome a little blackmark will go on the cashier's record. If there are repeated allegations against him he will eventually get sacked - a trend of disputes only happens if somebody's on the fiddle.

No need to over-react. Just deal with it calmly and sensibly.

It sounds a bit weird too as the OP said that the cashier weighed it a *couple* times then took money off - which might suggest something needed checking several times.

I would not attribute it to malice either, and it doesn't matter that it's the most senior employee, if the OP is convinced they are right, they should have a right to complain.

Just one thought - if there was anything funny with the cash - say wouldn't money be weighing different if wet? What if they made a mistake by weighing when paying in that they repeated when paying it out?

Obviously the tills would tally, but all their records would actually confirm that the bank received money weighing a specific amount, and that they gave money with the same weight to the OP - not that it was the right amount.
    Enjoy the silence...

if there was anything funny with the cash
I do remember a cash centre fraud many years ago where £20 notes were removed and replaced with £10 M&S vouchers - which were exactly the same size and weight.

Peed off more than one customer using the cash machine!

I called into the branch earlier and was told that the person who was dealing with it was on lunch, i got a call a few minutes ago telling me that £20 had been credited to my account, no details were given weather the safe was short or not but i got the money back, that's the main thing.

Sounds like you got a goodwill payment whilst they investigate, or perhaps they just think its better to pay out (given the amount) rather than lose your custom.
