cash withdrawal was short, what can i do?

On the 16th Dec i withdrew a large sum of money from my bank, the teller weighed the cash a few times and finally took money off and put it back in the draw.
When i got home and counted it (3 times by myself and twice by my brother)i was £20 short, the teller didn't count the cash just weighed it. i don't know if that's standard procedure or not, (i have never withdrawn a large sum before). i contacted the branch the next day and have called in twice to find out what's happening.
I have been told that the tills tallied and that they were going to check the safe and, basically, i would have to be patient over the Xmas period. also i was told the teller is the most senior they have.
I have a sneaky feeling that the safe will be all accounted for and that's that.
What can i do, who else can i contact?

Are you sure you didn't take £20 out before you got home? Or could it have fallen out of your bag? Did you go to any other shop between leaving the bank and arriving home?

If you are sure that you are correct, then you can make a complaint - instructions how will be on their website.

However, I'd be very surprised if they short-changed you. I have never known note weighing machines to make a mistake (and I'm a bit OCD about things like that so used to weigh and count money when I was a cashier).

How much is a "large sum of money"? If we're talking £500 the chance of there being a mistake seems very low, but if it's £10,000 it's much more plausible. For the future you can always ask them to count it out in front of you, this is what Natwest do when I withdraw money (~£800 once a month) although they first do it with the machine, never had them come up short.

I went straight home when i got the cash, the teller put it in a large envelope for me and i didn't go into it until i got home

£2,500. Maybe not as large as £10,000 but a seriously large sum to me.
  • I'd have asked them to manually count it out too - after all it's your money.
  • Was the money not banded into £1000 pound bundles? These are already pre-counted and double checked. They may give it to you as a goodwill gesture if you pursue it, it seems unlikely anything new would turn up from the safe I would have thought.

not once have i been given my money over the counter just by being weighed.
esp with such a sum of £2,500.
its always both weighed and counted or just counted then counted again out to me....

maybe the "senior" cashier has been a bit sneaky?
or the £20 has been mislaid somewhere??

i think the best you can hope for is a goodwill gesture - but is it worth it considering you will prob be made to feel like a liar :o

hope u get it sorted x
  • Wow, I can't believe a bank would just weigh money before giving it out to you and not count it out.

Cheers for the response, i do feel as though the bank think i am lying as they said the tills tallied, I cant believe i walked away without asking for it to be counted but eh ho.
If i have time tomorrow I'll call in to see what's happening. I'm not getting my hopes up but, if i don't get the £20 back i'll have no choice but to put a written complaint in about the teller and move banks. After all it could have been £120 short.
Do i have the right to ask for the tellers name so i could put it in writing?
