I'm on here looking for the same thing. We are with Liverpool Victoria as they are the only company I can find that will insure us. I'm looking for others to get some quotes.

    Hi there.

We moved in November 2005 to a bungalow where the porch had been rebuilt. On our Certificate of Structural Adequacy, Crawford say "The damage was the result of minor foundation movement to the porch. The cause was Subsidence of the site due to problems with the drain running underneath the porch."

The only company we could find for buildings insurance was Axa Insurance so it is worth asking them for a quote. I will try LV when the policy comes up for renewal. Are there any others that will quote?

Axa has given us a £500 "Subsidence Excess". This all seems very heavy handed bearing in mind that the claim was a one off for damage caused by a leaking pipe which was re-routed away from the property as part of the remedial work. Presumably there is no way that we will ever have a clean bill of health and this incident will be with the bungalow for its lifetime and maybe for the site beyond that?

A knock on effect of this subsidence issue is with contents insurance believe it or not.

I used the Money Tips item to get a great deal with Barclays whereby they quoted £119.88 on a like-for-like against my renewal quote from Budget. As I understand it, I pay them the £119.88 and they then refund the difference (£48.21) plus £50 (a total of £98.21) when I send them the renewal documentation. This means I pay only £21.67 so thank you Martin!

However, having read the various Insurance threads I was very nervous about any potential problems arising from any future claim (God forbid!) with the subsidence issue and spent a good half hour on the phone to Barclays to make sure they were fully aware of the issues. The Helpliner had various conversations with an underwriter and promises that he has made an appropriate note on my file. Fortunately it made no difference to the quote.

  • My brother and I just purchased our first place together in order to get our feet on the property ladder. Our mortgage is with Northern Rock but we chose to take our Buildings & Contents Insurance out with another company, now Northern Rock are charging us £25 administration charge for not taking their insurance.....is this normal practice? Is this legal?????

We have had two expensive mountain bikes stolen in the past 6 months - one was locked up outside a supermarket and the other was taken from a locked garage. I asked TESCO for a quote for contents insurance and they said they wouldnt insure us AT ALL because we have made 2 claims in the past 6 months! Is this a common experience? Any ideas about how we can get some decent insurance?

    Maany thanks

  • Is it worth taking out the legal expenses cover on home insurance? It seems to add less than 10% to the premium, but is there any point to it?

Looking forward to your answers. Thanks.
  • im looking to take out buildings insurance but just wanted to know 2 things

1- when you enter details for a quote they ask you how much it'd cost to rebuild your home, any ideas on how you work this out?!!

2- accidental damage seems to be only £25 or so more, is it worth adding and is it tough to get these companies to pay up?!

  • Can anyone help me? I am in a housing association house. I had damp come through and ruin all my paintwork in the house from the outside drainage being broken. Eventually after being ill through the damp the housing association rectified the problem, but I lost 15 pairs of shoes and need to redocorate the bedroom, living room and kitchen. I tried to claim thru my house insurance who said outside drainage wasnt covered. The housing association told me that their insurance would pay out. Ive applied and theyve turned me down due to it being outside even though the drainage being broken in 3 corners of my flat was down to the Housing Association. The total they owe me is c.£1500 of damage. Is there anything I can do or anywhere I can get some advice from ? Any help would be gratefully received! Janine x
  • Hello Everyone

I wanted to let you know this, you may even already be aware. Anyway, I was doing a check on my home insurance policy, and fishing around on the internet for a cheaper option. My annual cost is £388, this did include a number additional items covered. I have been with Tesco since September 2003, also I have never made any claims on my policy.
It was fairly easy enough to find another company which could offer the same type of cover I needed. The average was ranging from £220 up to £280. However, I decided to go into Tesco’ web site and go through the process for a quote. I was astounded to find that I could get the same identical cover for a cost of £239.40. I called the customer services to try and get someone to explain why my policy was costing £149 more than the quote I was given on the website. It was explained to me that this is a promotional offer for new customers. I did ask if I could get this changed, their answer to me was very simple, close off your current policy (Which a fee is charged), and start a new policy. Ok, so this sounds fair enough, but this so called promotion seems to be on going, as it was in place when I first started back in 2003.
I also asked why they do not inform their current customers who have been with them for a while, as they may well be in the same situation as me, a yearly increase to its current customers, while new customers get a 30% plus discount.

A simple message really. Anyone who has Tesco home insurance, which has been going for a couple of years or more, should go back to the website and get a new quote, they may be surprised what they find.
  • After reading all the stuff about Quidco, I thought I would drop a line on here for a bit of advice really.

Just got my renewal quote through for £396 for buildings and contents and used the comparison websites for a new quote and have come up with the Post Office (who oddly enough came up trumps for my car insurance in March this year) with a reduced premium of £186. I've checked all the details and this policy would actually cover me for more than the previous policy at the higher renewal price! Result indeed...

So I was then looking at this forum and noticed all the stuff about cashback and Quidco, so I joined and I can link to the Post Office website and retrieve my quote from there.

Does this mean I would get some cashback if I went through this route?

    Any advice appreciated... :j

Just had my Home and Contents insurance renewal from Direct Line. Home + Contents + Accidental damage. Renewal Quote: £322.25

Taken exact same policy just over a week ago, with Direct Line - The excess amounts are £50 lower and cover of contents a couple hundred higher and the New Policy Quote with same company is: £178.50 - Less £100 Quidco cashback = £78.50 :rotfl:

How do Direct Line get away with quoting renewal policies at £322.25, when you can get the same policy as a new customer/policy (with lower excess and greater content cover) for £78.50
