Nightmare with Swinton at the moment. We stuck with them back at the 2012-2013 (December)renewal despite an initial higher renewal offer as when challenged they dropped it significantly but we insisted it was not to auto renew as we would be shopping around for 2013-2014. Guess what - tried to auto renew. We called and told them we would be going with someone else (which we did). I cancelled direct debit as a precaution before the policy renewal date. They tried to auto renew despite us telling them at least twice over the phone not to and now we are getting letters stating we owe £160 odd quid and if not paid will be passed onto debt collection agency. One of their staff fobbed the other half off on the phone today stating that they have to legally auto renew a policy which I think is BS, especially as we asked to not auto renew last year. They are now demanding proof of alternate policy from that date before they will even look at backing off with demands for money. We are going to drop into the local branch on Saturday morning with the required documents but I am really fuming with them at the moment.

If you have no luck with the local branch send a letter to their Head Office marked "Official Complaint" and send by recorded delivery.

They generally waive the charge if dealt with this way
  • Home insurance provides financial protection against damages. home insurance is policy its provided by many companies. this type policies covers the both damages to your properties and legal responsibilities for any harm and property damages you and other members of the family.

During the recent torrential rain and wind, water got in via our dormer windows. An attic carpet started to go mouldy and had to have a large section cut out. Water also came through two bedroom ceilings!

I made an enquiry to the SAGA claims line solely about the carpet and was put through to Ageas.

I have never claimed on any policy in my lifetime, but was checking if the £800-£1000 carpet was covered.

Basically, within a few seconds "computer says no" was the response as this was wear and tear on the roof/dormers. At the same time, friends were getting £1500 up front from different insurers to make their property waterproof.

I let SAGA know that I was disappointed with Ageas and was issued a complaint reference and a claim reference even though I never made a claim.

I have spoken to SAGA about cancelling the insurance and moving elsewhere but am told that my 'claim' must be completed. I explained that there never was a claim just an enquiry but was told that this is still an 'incident' that must be closed before I can move...and that must be declared when buying new insurance.

At my own expense I have had the dormers replaced.

So be warned that any enquiry about a possible claim is an insurance 'incident' that has to be closed before moving company and declared with any new policy purchase!

  • Hi there, not sure if this is the right place to post these details?Just taken out contents ins with the AA and I got free roadside breakdown cover for 12 months. ;)
  • Im currently with more than for home insurance I have been for the past 5yrs i know prices go up with this current state the country is in but surely if I havent claimed they shouldnt be putting it up the amount they have does anyone know who is a decent company to get a better deal from without ripping me off
  • I completely agree. What was true 5 years ago is still relevant today in terms of your insurance policy and your insurance carrier. You cannot cut corners when you are thinking of insurance. The primary concern has to be whether you are covering all risks and how prompt the insurance carrier is in terms of settlement of claims and how much his people can help you in assessing the loss. That is the deciding factor not the premium amount.

Morethan currently advertise that their home insurance is less than it was in 2010.

Ask them how come yours is so much more!
