  • Hello
This is my first post on the forum, so please excuse if posted in the wrong area of the site.

We are insured through Nationwide for both buildings, contents and accidental damage.

We had a leak in the shower room in May this year which also led to the identitification of another leak in the bathroom which is downstairs.

It has been five months since the work commenced and the job has been left unfinished. Crawfords the underwriters who are handling the claim do not communicate properly but today was the last straw! I have received a letter saying the work has been finished almost 90% and that for the remaining job they will offer me a paltry £225.
I am lost for words. Simply, can they not send in their representative to check if their builders have done the job or not. How long can we continue to live like this?

Can somebody advise what is the best way forward.
    Thank you

  • Hi,
I just wanted to vent and share my anger...and warn people away from Elephant Home Insurance.

We recently went to spain on holiday and had all of our electrical stuff stolen from our car. A relative suggested that we claim no our home contents insurance with Elephant, since our travel insurance frankly wasn't worth the paper it was written on. We did this and I have to say what a process...I literally had to explain the circumtances of the theft at least 4 times before then having to repeat the exercise in writing.

I discover that Heath Lambert (as elephant are better known) aren't actually my insurer (it was in fact Legal & General) and that the left hand so to speak didn't know what the right hand was doing...to the point where 2 weeks after we received a settlement cheque (for only half the claimed for items I might add (that's a whole other story)), I received a call from Elephant to ask if my recent theft had been settled and had I got any of the damage sorted !!! (It was a theft from a motor vehicle in Spain !)

A couple of weeks later my policy was due to expire, but rather than shop around and since I had at least recovered some of the costs, I decided to accept Elephants renewal, since the cost was about £3 / £4 different to what it was previously.

The trouble began when the first direct debit was due to go out...
The first payment was indeed paid and then a day later I spotted another payment to Elephant for the same amount.... I contacted my bank who, reversed the overpayment.

I then got a letter from Elephant telling me that there was a problem with my direct debit and I should contact them, which I did..

I explained the two direct debits and that seemed to be fine, I was told that someone would phone me once they'd worked out what had gone wrong.

A week later I received another letter from Elephant saying I was in arrears with my policy and that unless I phoned them to pay what was owing etc etc... This I did and it was then that I was told that the letter they'd sent me was incorrect, but the policy had had to be cancelled because of and I quote "A recent claim that we didn't know about"!!!!!

They then tried to increase the premium by about £150. I obviously refused, did a money supermarket.com and go a policy for around what I had been paying.

I now have been sent a letter demanding that I pay £12.51 for cover between my renewal date and the date I (yes I) cancelled the cover, and if I don't pay it within 7 days they'll pass to a debt recovery company.

As a man of modest means, I've no option but to pay the money they say I owe. I've no doubt that had I made a claim within the period they're saying I had cover for, there would have been some problem in paying out, but I don't have £8 million to fight a legal case....

I think this company operates in an utterly disgraceful way, has no clue as to what is going on with it's claims and renewals and simply has no business dealing with the public, since it is imho so utterly incompetant.... BE WARNED - STAY AWAY FROM ELEPHANT.CO.UK
  • I have done the same procedure as you did. so i submit in Barklay 80 and get back 120 pounds.
awesome information sending by you. thanks man
  • After being with Endsleigh for over 7 years without claim on contents, I phoned to cancel as I was combining both my contents and buildings insurance together.

Engsleigh charged me the equivalent of 6 months' premiums to cancel. The bulk of which was taken up with a £50 cancellation charge.

The rest was due to Endsleigh using other companies to provide specific (in this case legal and home emergency) and although the policies are cancelled the full year's premium is to be paid.

As all this was in the Ts and Cs there's nothing I can do. But felt the need to write somewhere so as to drive others away from Endsleigh toward better, fairer, more honourable insurance providers.
  • I've found an exciting site called ipersonaltouch.co.uk that gives 10% cash back and 3% donation to charity. We bought our home insurance through them last week and will let you know how quickly we can recoup our cash back

I have just got an online quote for home insurance from Swiftcover. They did not ask any of the questions about security (door and window locks, neighbourhood watch) that others ask. Is this kosher? I know they are owned by AXA but this still seems a bit dodgy to me. Has anyone ever made a claim on a Swiftcover home policy and, if so, how did they respond?

  • My insurance company sent me a quote to renew my buildings and contents insurance. I found a cheaper quote. I was going on holiday and tried to call them to cancel but their office was closed so I cancelled my direct debit payment. Two weeks after the policy had expired I received a letter saying they were unable to collect their money, followed quite closely with another letter saying I owed them £32 because I did not renew with them. The last letter just before Xmas was threatening solicitors for non payment. Can they do this?
They sent me a quote which I ignored as it was too expensive, I assume I am free to change my policy on its expiration without consulting the previous insurer and also to stop anyone removing unauthorised money from my bank account or aren't I ???? But why, therefore, do they expect me to pay them £32??
  • My response is - cheeky blighters! In my experience, once the insurance has expired, that's the end of it. I would like to know which Insurance Company it is, as I am due to renew mine in January - sounds like one to avoid!
if i had known then what i know now
