OK, under ideal conditions the best you could hope for with a 58db line is somewhere between 3 to 4 Mbps.
Your router is syncing at its default noise margin which is around 7db.

    How is your router connected?
You could try connecting to the test socket behind the master faceplate i.e.

Also do a quiet line test. Dial 17070 and select option 2.

  • Ours is slow too. We don't have a master socket. Can we get one installed to improve speed? Sorry to hijack the thread!
Our previous isp gave us 5.4 meg but our new Sky is 0.5 meg!

You can, but it will cost you £130 unless there is a fault on the first incoming socket, which BT OR will designate as the master for billing purposes.
If your speed has dropped that much (and you weren't previously on VM cable) the some other factor is at play, so post your router stats. If no master, test using ethernet (not wireless) from the first socket.
Have you checked your filters are good and in place on all active extensions?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks for your prompt reply. Don't know if you can make sense of these stats! We were not previously on VM Cable by the way.

Disconnect everything from all your phone sockets.

Just plug in the router via a microfilter and repost your stats.
If no improvement ring Sky, with your line ( 22db), you should be getting around 16 Mbps, unless you on the awful Sky connect where the max is 8Mbps.

if you are confident at electronics its really easy to fit a master socket, the speed issue is normaly an exchange load issue rather than sockets though
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

No. Most problems are caused by internal wiring issues.
There are two 'speed' issues, the synchronisation speed between the router and the exchange, and the maximum data transfer rate that the user achieves.
The above problem is most likely to be the former.

You need to ring Sky and get them to increase the speed of your connection.
They will be able to see your stats from their end, and you have done everything you can at your end.
