Sky broadband (slow)

Hi all, I am on sky broadband unlimited but until yesterday i only recieved 0.6mb speeds!!!!!!! I contacted them, they looked into it for me and after a while of debate i was increased to 4.0mb which is apparently all my line has. This is from the master socket but i can not keep my modem there. Either way even at the master socket i tried a spped test and got 1.1mb.
Why is there a difference between what i'm capable of recieving and what i can get?
What can i do next to improve my speed?
BTsay i should be recieving approx 2.5mb but max 4.0mb so Sky are not lying about the max speed i can recieve.

All help appreciated.

The maximum you can get is the maximum that your line can support. If the speed is greater from the master socket than an extension socket, then there may be an issue with your internal wiring-this is down to you and not your ISP or line rental provider. Have you got known good filters on all the active extensions?
Why can you not plug your router into the master socket and use wireless to the PC/laptop?
NB: by 'modem' I assume you mean a router?-if you are still using an old USB modem then it really is time to ditch it and upgrade.
If you post your router stats then someone can have a look for you.

  • Thanks Macman

As i stated above, i was told 4.0mb was the best possible on my line, but even from the master socket the my sppedtest was 1.1mb. They increased my router speed????? from 0.7mb to 4.0mb to acheive this but now i've checked again it's down to 1.3mb? Why can i not get 4.0mb if that's what my line can support?
The master socket is in the corner of the house, we have very thick stone walls and no matter where i put the router (not modem.... my mistake) it never covers the whole house.
I do have filters on everything that goes into a phone socket.
I try to post my router stats just not sure how to!

Have you got any noise/crackling on the line?
Try changing the filters one by one.

  • No macman, I don't have any noise or crackle on the line.

do you think the filter may be the cause of not getting the full 4.0mb my line can support? Just seems strange to me that 1 phone call and they can double my speed from 0.6mb to 1.1mb when i'm paying for unlimited bb, why do i not just recieve the max my line supports?

I have no idea, you won't know until you test it, but it's the first thing to check as it's so easy. Absent or faulty filters are a common cause of poor line speeds. It's just a matter of working through and eliminating all possible fault areas. Was the speed test done using ethernet from the BT test socket behind the master socket faceplate? If not, you need to retest from there. If the problem remains then it's probably a line issue.
'Unlimited' refers to data allowance-nothing to do with your line speed.

  • yeah, the spped test was done from the master socket test socket, i have then tested again when i moved the router back to it's normal position and the results were the same. So from that i guessed that micro filters were not the answer.... maybe i'm wrong.
Just can not understand why if my line is capable of supporting 4.0mb then why am i only recieving 1.1mb from the test socket?
