Has someone changed the law?

  • If ever you aren't given a full pint ask them 'oh and can you get a shot of whiskey in there?'

If they reply 'yeah of course' say 'then fill it up to the top then!' :rotfl:

Just to answer the "It's only a pint" brigade, pubs sell 200 million more pints a year than they actually buy from the brewers. So just think how much extra profit they are gaining by serving short measure drinks. And if you take it to spirits and wines (expensive enough), drop for drop it's a pretty penny.

But under UK law a reasonable head may form part of a pint....

Part of this though is gassing up. I can't remember the exact figures that breweries recommend but if you have say an 11 gallon keg (88 pints) of your typical pressurised tipple, then by the time it is pumped through with CO2 it will be nearer 100.
  • I used to work in a pub and we got 'mystery shopped' regularly to make sure we were given proper measures and pints, if I remember correctly my boss told me that both the pub and the employee would be fined... although this could have just to put the wind up us!!

According to the Trade descriptions Act, it is still illigal to sell an unmarked pint in the Uk, regardless of where the glass is made.

The law in this area, strictly speaking, means that the pint should be 100% liquid - i.e, the liquid should go up to the brim or the line. There have been a few court cases challengin the 95% rule (i.e, that no more than 5% of a pint consists of a head), but it has always been held that people expect a head.

The problem comes down from the brewers using their muscles to stop the government introducing legislation that would mean people would be served pints in lines glasses (oversized) as opposed to the brim ones commonly used now. Of cause, the brewers and pubs would put up prices to make up for the extra cost.

the whole point of my litle rant though is that the glass was not stamped. Have reported it to Weights and Measures - just waiting o see what they say.

  • i think the shocking part about this thread is that the OP went into a pub, got an unmarked glass and can still remember it.
The idea of going into a pub is to get p*ssed so you shouldn' have any recollection of what happened from 10pm onwards, nevermind details of the glass.

Normally I would, but this pub used to be one of my favourites and is opposite my bus stop. I only went in to see what it was like since the new owener got their mitts on it.
It is currently in teh Good Beer Guide - I don't expect that to continue.
