Has someone changed the law?

In one of my former favourite pubs (now with new management who are, frankly, abysmal) the other day and asked for a pint of beer. The glass used was dirty (brim full of lipstick) so I asked for a clean glass.

On handing the dirty glass back, I noticed that there was no crown stamp (or the new CE mark for that matter).

Politely told the bar staff that the glass shouldn't be used anyway, and was told "glasses don't need to have stamps on them anymore". She then gave me another (clean) glass and said "See? that one hasn't got one either!" (it did but it was quite faint, but that's another matter)

Am I missing something? Before I report it to the local Weights and Measures authority, I just want to make sure that I am not insane.
Don't bother trying to sue me - I've got no money!

If you read the article that you yourself linked, you'll see it's nothing to do with the EU as such. It's just most pint glasses are no longer produced in Britain, and so don't have the Crown marking on (but may have an EU stamp)

Is it really a problem? As long as the glass's full!

    It's a problem if it isn't a pint glass.

The law hasn't changed: unless it's a metered pump (a measured pint into an oversize glass), it must be a marked pint glass. Sure, many of them won't now be marked with the Crown (as pointed out, they aren't made in the UK any more) but with a European CE mark, but they must still be marked. A pint served otherwise is, indeed, illegal.

And you will have absolutely no idea how much beer you have paid for. So yes, report them to the local Trading Standards. Your glass my well have contained a pint (you don't know and they probably don't either) but they're taking illegal short cuts.

LOL, All this over a pint!:rotfl:

I think I'm pretty good at recognizing a pint glass when I see one!
  • You'd be surprised. If everyone had the attitude "all this over a drink!" pubs could be ripping people off left right and centre.

No wonder consumers are seen as being an easy ride sometimes in this country, if nobody bothers to do anything about potential problems.

Yes, it might only be a smallish amount every time, but how many pints do you reckon they serve in a week?

Biggles is spot on, report them to Trading Standards.

Just answering a straightforward question with a straightforward answer ;-)

You may doubt this, but if you were presented with a beer in a half-litre glass of the same design, you would not notice the difference. And the brewery chain (or the bent landlord) would be coining in an extra 30p or more clear profit on every single drink.

And even more pure profit if they then give your beer a half inch head in the half litre glass. :(
