Onavo iphone Data Usage Tracking App

Options
I just downloaded this app after getting ridiculous bills for Data from Orange after its own app told me I was under my allowance.

Any Onavo experts out there who can help with the most efficient way to use this - can it really save data use?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

the iphone has a data monitor built in under settings>general>data usage, you just have to remember to reset it on your billing day.

as for the app, I personally wouldn't want all my data going through someone else's servers, but how it works is you request data and it gets sent to them and they compress it and then send it to you where you phone can decompress it, therefore you could use say 700MB of data but only have received 500MB.
  • Wow, thanks both, thats really useful to know. I left Onavo on all night just to track and it just showed me a huge pie graph - guess what - the Facebook chunk was Massive! (take care all you heavy Facebook users, cos I dont even go on it but it still runs in the backlground updating, syncing etc, presumably if you're logged in.)

I have now proudly deleted Facebook off my iphone and all its data! Will go back to using laptop at home for that price. I dont want any more £100 bills!

It has been said in many posts, people want constant pointless updates, and whinge when they have been abroad, are you going to do the right thing and apologise to the phone company?

Yep indeed, I keep background data on, but no autosyncing, facebook and such like can use data whilst I view the pages, I think this month I may get away with a 2nd month of less than 100mb data (and I'm on a no restriction data plan)
  • Err - I haven't complained to the phone company? Perhaps you are mistaken as there is a guy on other thread who has? I have done the sensible thing regarding justice in this country by establishing the cold facts first and doing my research to ascertain events and causes before contacting any companies. It is my understanding that this is what this forum is for ie asking for help and advice, not for indulging ones own problem behaviour by jumping on others. I repeat my thanks for the courtesy and generous helpfulness of the other posters.
  • sorry about that got confused with the other thread its just alot of people are too quick to blame the company we have peopel saying phone ofcom etc when all that it is is their own settings

Yes, I too got the two threads 'merged' as the same app was mentioned, perhaps the other guy should see this thread, although he maybe too stubborn to realise the phone has a settings feature and that is the 1st place to check before moaning :o
Thanks to the OP for claryifying the situation

Yes, I haven't complained but I am dissatisfied with the quality of Orange's own 'tracking' app, not necessarily with their billing. Lots of people rely on these systems to check their usage as they go along and mine kept saying zero. Even for internet, it says zero, but I'm now given to believe that 'data' is different. Phone companies don't seem to be in any hurry to clarify the wording (say, 'downloads' instead of 'data') or to add proper data tracking into their own apps or bills so we can monitor it. With Onavo I could see instantly the biggest 'culprit' was Facebook, which was exactly what I needed to know so I am very very happy with that!
  • its a a bit strange yours always says zero mine seems to be spot on when i check what i have used
