Good and bad areas east of Manchester

Hattersley was home to the Moors Murderers (the terrace they lived in was demolished years ago) and was built as a Manchester overspill estate in the 1960s. Hyde was home to Dr Shipman. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

I use police.uk and neighbourhood stats from the gov to get data about the area but nothing beats asking the opinion of a local because sometimes data can give conficting advice.
People tend to agree that Gamesley is not a great area but car insurance there is relatively cheap.
Or if I check the crime rate in a place with very few people, the number is very low. But that makes sense if there are very few people! Similarly, you should expect a build-up area to have much higher crime figures although that doesn't mean the crime rate is high there!0 -
have you looked a bit further towards south manchester We live in Hazel Grove which is a nice area, 2 supermarkets, 5 mins from the train station (15 minute train ride to picadilly) car insurance is alot cheaper (my dad lives in oldham and had a quote for 750, we put our address in and it was 320)
I tend to look for houses and good areas by looking at the car insurance quote. It's high around Newton and of course cheap in Hazel Grove and Romiley but it is not consistently like this. One street away in Hyde can be cheap. The quotes I get for some areas are ridiculously high, that why I pick areas by car insurance prices.
I'm definitely looking further south too, around Bredbury and Romiley. Hazel Grove is outside my budget (£100k). House prices around Dukinfield and Hyde are very cheap, that's why I'm still keeping an eye on that region.
Anyone knows anything about Offerton? It's squeezed in between Bredbury/Romiley and Hazel Grove.0 -
Stop telling people to live out at Broadbottom, Dinting, Glossop, Hadfield ... By the time that commuter train reaches me on its way into Piccadilly, it's like a can of sardines - we can't fit any more in :rotfl::heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

It is definitely not somewhere I would ever choose to live. Glossop itself is a nice town. Friendly, with a good range of shops. We also have a train station - 30 mins to Manchester - but the road traffic is abysmal
Marple is nice - two railway stations with good Manchester links, but more expensive to buy. Marple Bridge is the 'nicer' bit.
All the areas you mention ARE mixed! You will need to visit on foot, but as a starter, if safety/crime are an important factor, check out the Police crime map website.
On the whole, the further towards Stockport you go, the better the areas will tend to be (although obviously not a hard and fast rule). They are also more expensive though!
I don't know Bredbury, but Romiley is OK.
I visited Glossop and felt a bit cut off too, like Nettttie said. I guess it's too countryside for me. I find the 30min train ride a little long, given that it will take less from places like Romiley.
I agree with you, the further south into Stockport, the better the area. This is why Romiley is at the top of my list. It feels like a little village to me without being cut off from the rest of the world. And with Stockport not far, there's plenty going on. I think Marple might be beyond my budget of £100k though.0 -

Where do you live?
I'm in north Manchester now and cycle to work. It's such a pleasure and so relaxing not to have to take the train everyday as I used to. Except sometimes there are some aggressive drivers but I let them have a taste of their own medicine
I dread taking the train again. Paying a high fare, getting delays and cancellation in return. And the can of sardines too. Except if it takes only 15 min by train, I should be able to survive it. I hope...0 -
offerton again its a mix of council(roughish) to posher areas. if your budget is a 100k then forget stockport you will only get the rougher areas, how about north rossendale has some nice small towns. same with ramsbottom.0

!
Thats because even if you rob a car on gamesley you cannot navigate your way off without a tank full of fuel. My brother has lived on Gamesley for over 10 years & has owned a few pubs around Glossop & Hadfield in his past. I am not a fan and been said here its just a big council estate , Mottram & Outskirts of Hyde are nice but each town have their good and bad points. (born and bread in Birkenhead so who am i to comment) hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0 -
These places are miles away! I don't want to go that far. I found several properties in Romiley & Bredbury for less than £100k.
If Offerton is a mix, then maybe it's not so bad. Car insurance was not too high there. And it's surrounded by better areas: Marple and Hazel Grove.0 -
I was in Gamesley. The layout of the roads is a mess. The back of the house leads to the road but the front is on a path and that's the address of the house! Many have to park their car far away and walk to their house. Messy layout. Especially since they built this estate from scratch, from what I've read on the net.0
