Good and bad areas east of Manchester

Anyone can comment on whether the areas east of the M60 such as Hyde and Stalybridge, and the smaller ones Dukinfield and Newton are good or bad places to buy a house and live?

I live in Glossop, which is slightly further out (actually in Derbyshire) along the route you're talking about. As with most places, there are 'nicer' bits in all the places you mentioned.
Godley (Hyde) is nice, but more expensive than the rest. Lots of Hyde isn't that great at all. Stalybridge has lovely bits - esp the bit towards Mottram (which is also lovely and only a bit further out). I would avoid Carrbrook.
I don't know Dukinfield at all. Newton (Hyde) is horrid - in particular, avoid Flowery Field.
What is important to you in an area? Transport? Schools? Amenities? Countryside? Where will you be working? Answer these and we'll have a better idea on how to advise!0 -
You paint a mixed picture of Hyde and Stalybridge. Godley is just next to Newton and Flowery Field Station.
I checked Mottram - there's nothing there, no shops, nothing.
I work in Manchester city centre, so living not far from a train station is important as well as access to local amenities, supermarkets and so. That's why I think Mottram is not a good idea. I don't have a car yet.
Since I am buying a house to live long-term, the area is very important to me - somewhere safe and quiet but with easy access to Manchester and local amenities. I am not into all these restaurants and nightclubs; anyway, there are plenty in Manchester if I need them. It can't be too countryside as well because then I'll be stuck without a car for now.
Since you live in Glossop, how are Gamesley and Glossop? Car insurance and house prices in Gamesley are very affordable.
Do you know anything about Bredbury and Romiley?0 -
mm i would not live at gamesley. my sister did years ago and it was not nice. mottram is ok. all the areas are working class so expect good bits and less good areas. look at the local area census info for the wards that your intrested in . it will indicate the areas make up. the local crime map could be of help too. if your also thinking of bredbury extend it to marple as well.0

have you looked a bit further towards south manchester We live in Hazel Grove which is a nice area, 2 supermarkets, 5 mins from the train station (15 minute train ride to picadilly) car insurance is alot cheaper (my dad lives in oldham and had a quote for 750, we put our address in and it was 320)0

but you do have the a6.0

Gamesley is essentially a massive council estate, with no train links, and consequently has many of the attendant problems. It is definitely not somewhere I would ever choose to live. Glossop itself is a nice town. Friendly, with a good range of shops. We also have a train station - 30 mins to Manchester - but the road traffic is abysmal
Marple is nice - two railway stations with good Manchester links, but more expensive to buy. Marple Bridge is the 'nicer' bit.
All the areas you mention ARE mixed! You will need to visit on foot, but as a starter, if safety/crime are an important factor, check out the Police crime map website.
On the whole, the further towards Stockport you go, the better the areas will tend to be (although obviously not a hard and fast rule). They are also more expensive though!
I don't know Bredbury, but Romiley is OK.0 -

I suppose a lot of it is relative to where you are coming from?
I work in West Gorton but live in Broadbottom, which is a lovely village next to Mottram. The Glossop train route is excellent; as for no shops in Mottram Tesco is currently being built, Hattersley has a fair few shops. I'd say half way between Broadbottom and Mottram, you've got the train station and supermarket then.
I'd also live in Godley, Newton, Glossop, not Flowery Fields, and parts of stalybridge are lovely/safe. Living in Glossop you're actually better off without a car, it caters for everything and last train from town is 11.30.
I actually feel a bit cut off, I think I'm a misplaced townie0
