and no bundled packages or long contracts - I have recently moved to Newnet on their light user package (£12.95 pm for capped 3gb). They have one month contracts too. Line speed is 'up to 8 MBs'.
I have to say they have been excellent with their customer service (UK based with local rate calls answered promptly) and as a non techie they have been really helpful to me.
I'm not an employee and have nothing to do with the company other than being a very happy customer.
I see lots of complaints here about various ISPs and I moved from another excellent ISP (Zen) with great trepidation as they too are excellent - although for my usage - too costly.
The whole thing was MAC'd and switched in just a few days.
Whilst sorry to leave a good company like Zen - it is nice to find another company as good.

That's great to hear Deleted_User. I transferred my MAC code from Virgin to Newnet about a week ago and start with Newnet this Thursday. Had sent them an email and they responded within 30 minutes. Very impressed. I decided on their M package, which allows up to 12GB at speeds up to 8mb. The subscription is £17.95 a month.
Hope the service is as good as it sounds.0 -
Been a Newnet customer since the demise of metronet.
They are a very good supplier and do appear to listen to their customers.0 -
I am so pleased to read this post, I was contemplating posting to see if anyone had any experience of Newnet.
I am a very disgruntled Virgin.net user, it was ok until I got maxed, speeds are abysmal, especially during the evening.
Having done a lot of research, Newnet seems to come out very good. IDnet and Zen look v.good but are more expensive,
I am going to ask for my Mac code from Virgin, but not sure just when I should cancel the standing order, it has just come out for this month, if I cancel now will I have to pay next months ?0 -
My speeds with Virgin were also terrible, never received anywhere near the 8mb I was promised. The best speeds around 3mb - but that was on a good day!
When I first requested the MAC code for some reason or other it never appeared. Left it a week then phoned again and received the code within a day.
Have left the Virgin direct debit until up and running with Newnet, then will contact Virgin.
Like Trisha, had done lots of research and checked out ISP's with highest ratings, Newnet comes around 10th (I think). But most of the highest rated ISPs seem to have very light user schemes, followed by usage up to 30gb. The price seems to jump quite a bit between usage levels. Newnet seemed to be the only one which offered the 12GB level at £17.95
We'll see how things go tomorrow, just a little worried about altering router settings and techy stuff.0 -
Could you let me have the number to ring Virgin for my MAC please ? I have emailed CS but don't know if they will send it to me.
Last nights speed was 165 mbps and during the day was 1800 I have never reached 3 mb time to move on I think, who knows how it will go now it is Virgin Media.
As regards payment, mine is due on the 13th Feb I am not sure whether that is for the previous or next month, I don't want to end up paying two lots with both ISP's so I am not sure when to cancel it.
Good luck with Newnet, I hope to join you there shortly.0 -
Hello Trisha
The number I was given by Virgin for requesting a MAC code is
0845 045 0709. I had originally phoned their Tech support line and they gave me the number. Make sure that they understand you definitely want the MAC code as the first time I phoned they had noted that I was only requesting information about it.
The Virgin payment for 13th Feb will be for the following month. I think you'll have to pay that one as it will take a week at least to connect to Newnet. Perhaps get the Virgin MAC code and keep it for a week or so then contact Newnet. Newnet have already taken my first month's sub from my credit card. Last paid Virgin on 23rd January, when I connect to Newnet tomorrow (hopefully) I'll contact Virgin and cancel my direct debit. Make sure you have been with Virgin for over a year as I think they now charge about £50 if you have been with them for less than that.
Good luck0 -
Hello again Libra,
How did it go ?
Are you getting faster speeds now?
I registered yesterday, so I should hopefully get an email today confirming my start date.
I must say it all looks very complicated with setting up the emails, I will need to set up four different ones too. I'm sure support will help me with it.
Kind regards

Started with Newnet yesterday and it's brilliant. Speeds in first 10 days vary considerably and I was surfing at around 4mb. Never achieved with Virgin. No downtime between transferring, just switched on yesterday and all we had to do was type the new Newnet username in the Belkin settings and away we went.
Customer service is excellent - I had left feedback saying how good the service was and they phoned back to thank me. Later sent an email asking about newsgroup settings and they phoned within the hour giving me the details. Which other ISP does that?
Haven't done a Newnet email yet, use Gmail and Hotmail. Will do one later, but not needed yet.
The only information I can't find is the amount of data I'm using daily. Will have another look later today. Just want to make sure not going over 12GB a month, although I don't think I'll reach six.
You won't regret transferring, good luck0 -
Welcome to Newnet
Been with them almost 12 months now, and quite happy.
To check your bandwidth used you need to go here and log in with the email address and password you chose when signing up
https://orderform.co.uk/login/index.php?form=orac
Then click on ADSL Service and bandwidth summary
There should also be an Email manager button on that page.
Lite now give up to 5 mailboxes (M up to 10) and it is fairly easy to set up.
But worth keeping gmail, yahoo or whatever to keep your options open.
By the way, make sure your Newnet account does have an active email address that you check regular.
Newnet send invoices a month in advance before dd payment required so you can check them.
You should be able to get better than 4MB speed depending on your line and exchange contention etc.
Here's one i just rolled off ...
