Someone tell me they are talking rubbish ?
We have been using wifi for years and never counts as data allowance , we never turn data off , if in range of wifi it connects to it and overrides he data service.
I've never turned off 3G data for my phones at home, everything i've owned just switches to Wifi automatically and doesn't bill the data plan. With heavy Wifi use at home and light 3G data use out and about (generally just checking email, facebook and a few web pages) i'm using about 150-200Mb of a 500Mb allowance each month.0 -

Just had a web chat with O2. They said even when connected to wifi in house phone is using data allowance unless we turn data off each time we want to use wifi, so even if phone shows we are connected to wifi we are using allowance !!!

Son got phone for Christmas and data package activated yesterday evening. Just checked and of His 500mb data allowance has used 96 mb in just over 24 hours
He has phone on wifi in house and I have just turned off background sync for data. Should turning this off reduce the usage? He says he has been using it on Facebook and to play games when out but as these games have been downloaded I take it they do not use data ?
The phone is Sony Xperia play.
Thanks
If your son is on PAYG look at https://www.giffgaff.com - its O2 also and he can buy packages which include unlimited dataJohn0 -
Apparently 100 Mb is about 100 web pages. IMHO, without downloading/streaming video/music it's difficult to use 100Mb during one day.
100mb is 1,000 simple webpages (such as Twitter and Blogs)
100mb is 300 media rich pages such as BBC, Guardian etc.
100mb is 12 medium length video clips on Youtube
(stats according to o2)
As for setting primary connection, not had to do that with any of my phones - Wifi is the lead connection if available - but if signal drops it will take up the mobile connection.
On my iPhone4s 13 days usage is showing as 74mb with average social media usage.0 -
I think something like this may be the case for iPhones, but not other phones: Unusual & excessive data downloading
Not true, they are talking rubbish when on home network - my PERSONAL opinion is there is an issue with the way some networks reading and measure wifi when roaming on some handsets.0 -
sorry didnt realise it was payg
i always turn off my data just incase dont want it running in the background some apps use the data i think when theyre downloading thingsWhat goes around-comes around0 -
I have a blackberry, and have 500mb limit on data with vodafone and never come close to using it.
I use it for emails, BBM and facebook or viewing internet sites on the go, I also have WIFI connection at home. I suspect it's either the games or downloading of apps on the move that's using up the data.
Told by Vodafone not to worry about going over the limit as they warn you in advance. Never had that warning though :-)0
