How can I stop a strange cat coming into my house?

Several times recently as I have gone into the kitchen , a strange cat ( I have 2 of my own ) has bombed out of the hall or dining room and out of the cat flap. Is there anything I can do to deter it coming in besides locking the cat flap which would mean my own cats couldn't get back in? Also I think it's spraying all over the place as the house stinks of cat wee so has anyone any tips for getting rid of the pong?

I am sure you can get a cat flap that is activated to open up if your cats where a special collar.
Just had a look on goggle here you go

Thankyou but we have had that type of cat flap in the past and the problem was that the cats kept losing their collars with the magnets on. I know that's probably the best way to keep the cat out , but it gets a bit expensive having to buy replacement magnets and we don't normally put collars on our cats , so I was hoping there was some other way!
Could do with something like a paw print sensor or voice (miaow) activated sensor :rotfl:0 -
I have had problems with cats in the past and just used cat repellent powder, but I don't have cats, someone has told me (don't recommend this myself as I'm sure RSPCA wouldn't be happy), but if you spray the cat with water or hit it with newspaper it shouldn't bother you again! Mind you if someone did that to me I'm sure I'd spend the rest of my life seeking revenge!2p off is still 2p off!0

The cat bombs out of the cat flap so quickly I don't think i'd have a cat in hells chance ( sorry) of hitting it!
Just had a thought , if I had the cat flap on 'In only' , it would have a hell of a shock plus possibly knock itself out when it dived at the locked cat flap!0 -
I had the same problem and tried everything to no avail until I found I could catch the cat by putting a clothes peg on the cat-flap so that it would open inwards but not outwards. The cat soon found it could get in but not out and I put a little note on it's collar saying the little !!!!!! was spraying in my house and if the owner didn't get it's knackers sorted then i'd do it myself with some pliers. The cat was clearly terrified having me chase it round the house too and I never saw it again.
A bit cruel? Maybe, but the smell was driving me bonkers!Does anyone know how to change my username? I was "Mr Investigation" and MSE's new software now shows it as "Dogsnob" !!!0 -

The smell's driving me bonkers too  Have you any tips for getting rid of the smell?
Think i'll have to try having the cat flap on 'In only' so that we can see if it has a collar on and find out who it belongs to0 -
Hope this helps
If your cat has urinated on your carpet, use bottled club soda. Remove the cap, stick your finger inside to block the top, shake hard to fizz and with your finger still inside the opening spray the club soda on the carpet until lightly wet. Don't soak the carpet but apply thoroughly. The carpet might smell worse at first, but when it dries will totally neutralize the odor & smell. This is not an odor cover up, it neutralizes the odor permanently and doesn't just cover one smell with another.

I have got a magnetic cat flap but still have a cat coming in my house. used to just head butt the cat flap until it gave way, now its owner has got a magnetic cat flap to so it can get in all the time now.
It eats all my cats food and has now started being sick in my newly decortaed (and carpeted) hallway.
I have thrown buckets of water over him, thrown things at him and even chased him right away at 2.30 in the morning.
nothing has worked still keeps coming back, luckily he hasnt sprayed though.
i can only hope and i know this is gonna sound really really mean, but the cat in question is 15 so hopefully will soon depart from us to cat heaven.
i love cats but this one just drives me mental. you dont live in christchurch do you ginger-pudding and it isnt a black cat ? just sounds so much like the one that comes in ours the way he bolts for the cat flap etc... at the speed of light.0 -

No and I don't think it's a black cat , more dark brown , although i've never been able to get a real good look at it as it's just a blur as it bombs outside!
That's awful about the cat being sick on your new carpet and I don't blame you for hoping the cat will not be bothering you for much longer. A cat was hit by a car near our house yesterday ( it wasn't killed ) and the driver knocked on our door later to ask if we knew who's cat it was as he felt bad about it and my husband said he hoped it was the cat that kept coming in our house and spraying everywhere :eek:0 -
We had the same problem - better since we got the magnetic cat flap though, but still have the same blasted tabby trying to get in. Had a couple of midnight cat fights inside which were a bit traumatic! For wees lemon juice is also good to stop them going in the same place (I believe cats are allergic to it). Water pistol worked well too - just waiting for somebody to report hubby for creeping around with it after dark!
Are you sure that it is the offending cat spraying? We have four cats, all neutered/spayed and our littlest boy sprays when stressed out. Vet says you can buy some plug in thing to chill them out and this stops it. But then he would say that as they are quite pricey!Annabeth Charlotte arrived on 7th February 2008, 2.5 weeks early0
