I would recommend Asus. I bought my first one over 5 years ago and never had any problems with it. Build quality was also really good.

Bought an Asus i5 couple of months back and sold the old one (Celeron, 1GB Ram, 80GB HDD).

New one also has really good build quality.

I went to Comet to look at the ASUS today but thought it rather dull in appearance so have left it for now! Not sure what to do now The more I look the more confused I become. Should I be trying out the laptop whilst in the store?

I`m like you a bit confused by all the "offers" which appear to be around the same price band.
I guess that`s competition.

Out of the sub £400 I would probably have gone for the Toshiba from JLP with a 2 year warranty at £379 (started the week at £399).
I`ve never known anyone who didn`t have a problem with a laptop at some stage so the 2 warranty and a good retailer would swing it for me.

However I`ve decided to let the dust settle for now and hang on into the new year.
If things are going to be as dire as predicted, better deals should be out there.
I`ve got a decent desktop anyway so there`s no big hurry to get a laptop.

Try them out by all means - the big thing that I found that annoys me about one of mine (ok, I have far too many computers and a weakness for prettily coloured shiny gadgets) is the touchpad on one of them (my Dell netbook) is god-awful! It's so bad it's practically unuseable meaning I always have to carry a mouse around with me when I'm using that machine. Made sure when I replaced the laptop (I've got both for different things) that I tested out the touchpads for the "driving me up the wall" factor as part of the buying process after that! It wasn't what drove my buying decision (I went for one with non-integrated graphics and a decent processor), but it was definitely a factor in it. Went for a Toshiba (probably since obsolted since I bought it 6 months or so ago - aaah the joy of electronics) and I'm very happy with it.

I have now thrown another spanner in the works. Went to PC World and was steered towards a Sony The name is good for me as I have bought many products over the years without problem TV Camera Video Recorder Blu-Ray player etc.
It is the VPCEH2HIE SNY VPCEHEH1E W. with an i3 processor and 500 GB
The more I look the more I see. This is at £449 which seems a good price to me.

The touchpad was one of the reasons I chose this laptop!! I went and tried all the trackpads and tried to do typing to check out the keyboards. The Lenovo's touchpad and number keys really swung it for me from the HP I was considering, which as I understand, has a better processer and more memory.
