seen this laptop - is it any good?

£299 - Asus 15” laptop with AMD Dual Core Accelerated E450 processor, 4GB memory & 750GB storage.

I need a laptop to replace my desktop computer. Just need it for online shopping, forums, FB etc and listening to music and photoshop etc... will this be OK?

Is the processor going to be fast?

That is a £300 laptop.

I'm looking for a cheap new laptop as well, I am sure that the best specced laptop sub £300 is this one on Currys.

It probabably sells for around £350 tops usually, so not much of a saving. In fact none of the laptops I have seen offer anything more than 10-15%

Out of the two laptops on this thread i'd take the Asus any day.

they are both reliable brands, the asus has more ram, but the cpu on this laptop scores 774

if you are only doing general stuff like movies, browsing etc then both laptops will do the job and things like size and ergonomics, screen etc will be more important

I saw these two while I was looking and getting more confused. The Comet one does not include software like Norton or Office suite I think. This could add another £200 nearly. Although of course there are plenty of free protection programmes.

Anyway does anyone have any advice. I have about £350 to spend max. Also is extended warranty worthwhile?

Wouldn't worry about the protection - lots of free good protection out there for personal use ...
You can also use 'Open Office' instead of Microsoft office -free to download and fully compatible - I know lots of people who use it and for my new PC I don't intend to buy Office....without trying out Open Office for myself first...

Apologies for the noddy question, but does this machine come with MS Office and Norton Anti-Virus as standard?

It won't come with MS Office. It might have MS Office Starter Edition which includes a cut down version of Word and Excel.

You don't want to use Norton - it causes many problems with slow computers, denying Internet access etc. If it does have it already installed, uninstall it!

There are plenty of excellent free anti-virus and firewall products available.

The specs on the link says it has MS Office Starter, which can be downloaded free, and a trial version of McAfee anti virus. It also has Norton online backup.

Personally I would be bothered about any of those, let the hardware specs guide your choice.

That amd cpu is useless, the first gen i3 would be far far better, you should also have a look at the dell inspiron with the celeron b800, costs 275ish from memory and a newer revision cpu that scores a bit lower, but should be less power hungry and still more than suitable for most
