I usually do the roll it in my hand method too, but I have a couple of blackwork things that I want to do and it says to work them in a frame.

Whoops, there's another rule I've broken then! I just can't abide frames though lol!

Thanks everyone, At the moment my fabric is so long that I am doing the rolled up hand method to. I just wish i had a hands free to speed everything up and hoops can be a bit of a fiddle to get on. I try to wrap my fabric round a kitchen towel tube to try and keep it free of wrinkles. I just ran out of a thread I need :( and not sure when i can next get to the shop to get it. I normally try and do all of one colour on the piece of chart Im working on (little OCD about this:o) but now I will have to move on to a different colour. Its so dark here today that I will need the lights on to actually be able to get any stitching done.

    Happy stitchy Wednesday everyone:)

OK I know I'm being dense and you've probably answered this before, but what if my fabric is bigger than 11 x 11, which I'm thinking it pretty much always will be?
Also I was just looking at the link and they have clip frames which seem to be the same thing and cheaper? I guess if they are that the lap frame has the advantage of not having to hold it all the time with your free hand?

I just fold the fabric and pin it to the sides of the frame. My 'Touched by magic' is 3ft wide and I can work it on the frame without any problems.

The best thing about the lap frame is that you can just sit it on your knee and you have both hands free. With a clip frame you still need to either hold it (which makes it more awkward than a hoop) or buy a stand to hold it. (more money and space needed)

morning everyone hope everyone is well, i cant remember who asked but i also photocopy my charts the stick all the pages togther so i have one big chart rather than lots of pages and then colour in with a sharp pencil so if i do have to unpick i can just rub it out.

queen b i try and do all of one colour at a time, thought i was the only one, does worry me that i may have miscounted and im constantly checking lol

been sorting through my stadch this morning and tellmeitsfriday (i love your name by the way and always have the urge on a friday to tell you its is friday lol)

Aha, there's a long story behind that name... involves a boy from the dim and distant past :)

...but it's stuck, and I'm keeping it...

And as for Fridays, as long as I've finished work, you tell me it's Friday, because (a) it makes me smile, and (b) that's exactly where the name comes from :-D

I found this one which I took about a year ago - it's not the clearest (I can take a new pic if it doesn't make sense) but you can see that I am working on the far left of the design, so there is over 3ft of material rolled up ad pinned on the right hand side of the frame. Because I don't have to twist my hand round to the back often (two handed stitching) the fabric doens't get in the way as much as it would normally.

    sorry about all the questions.

Don't be sorry and don't be afraid to ask more! :)
It's how we all learn. I have learnt so many new and brilliant things about stitching since joining the stitching threads.
For example, I used to use 2 lengths of thread through my needle but was getting lots of knots. From advice taken here I now use 1 length, fold it in half and anchor the first stitch using the loop method.
Another brill tip I took on board was to stitch so that the stitches lay the same way, it makes for a much neater finished piece. So the bottom of your X's all lay (for example) ////// then the top of the X's all go \\\\\\\.

Question.........what does everyone use to hold their stitching, I normally use a hoop but sometimes stitch without it. A friend of mine recently got a hoop that you sit on so hands free and she says its great but I have been looking at either a lap frame or a floor frame. Need advice so i can make a considered purchase.

I have a Posilock floor stand, frame(s) and helping hand(s) and wouldn't be without them. I used to use the frame on it's own and rest it on the edge of a small table which was fine but since getting the stand I now wouldn't want to go back :D
:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:

Thanks for the picture. Yes it does make more sense now. So would you go for the larger frame if you mostly do bigger pieces?
