Pope condemns 'superficial glitter' of Christmas season

The cheap glitter that we adorn our living rooms with, and the assorted presents with about 50p worth of glitter that we insist on exchanging. Stupid, wasteful indulgences we should be ashamed of. And we do it, every year, bang on the dot, for this one day.

Gold vestments, priceless works of art, expensive architecture. He stands amongst it all. Every single day of the year. That's the way to do it. Not just for one day, and with taste, dahlink. Pukka stuff. Real gold, real art. No tat.

We should watch and learn from him.

I was raised a catholic, and told that he is a direct line to God, and as such, you can't argue with him.


Merry Christmas. Now go forth and start planning how to get real proper expensive glitter for next year. Remember, superficial glitter is bad. He has spoken.

Amazing how someone representing such an enormously wealthy organisation and has access to great works of art, the best food, the best wine, the most beautiful precious metals and jewels and craftmanship, is the one best placed to criticise others for buying a bit of silver tinsel from the pound shop to stick on their Christmas Tree.

I think the "glitter" he is referring to is the commercialism of buying loads of presents and being more occupied with presents decorations lights santa etc than remembering that Christmas is celebrating Jesus' birth and his existence, and I agree with that sentiment. People are so obsessed with getting the latest gadgets and spending a fortune than appreciating Jesus at Christmas.

i think he has much larger problems to worry himself with than the "glitter" of christmas - heck, even if you take the Catholic faith's biggest problem out of the picture there's still the massive problem that in the developed world there's millions with "crisis' of faith", precious few Catholics actually bother with chapel these days (mind you, protestants are no better with this respect!), besides, it's all very hypocritcal when as has been pointed out, the church has the trappings of wealth better associated with royalty & aristocracy!

but the thing is it wasnt the day that jesus was born ... it was a holiday celebrated by the pagans that the christian church decided they would use to try and convert the pagans .... religon is often used to try ( and sadly often succeed) to manipulate people

Top misquoting from the OP there. Feel free to explain where he 'condemns' it. The BBC report states "he asked that people "see through the superficial glitter" of the season, and concentrate instead on the joy of the christmas message."

He is a hypocrite! the Catholic church is rich & opulent , our country spent millions of pounds on his recent visit which sickens me.A man who used to be part of the Hitler Youth Movement!

when I wrote my post I was fairly sure someone would reply just how you have re the timings - I'm sure I read somewhere that Jesus was born in june or july but is celebrated during the winter solstice instead. I think a lot of people know christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus but know it's not exactly when he was born.

Oh do get a grip. All young people in Germany at the time were enrolled in the Hitler Youth.

I am not a Catholic, but untrue and bigoted posts about anyone make me :mad:
