we went to get a new telly from currys last year, they do a price promise if you can find one cheaper within a certain radius they will match the price, yet another joke on the public, we found one cheaper but the staff refused to match the price claiming that they used AA autoroute to calculate the distance and the shop we found was .5 mile further away, despite spitting feathers at them they would not accept that "radius" does not mean via AA autoroute and that in a straight line the other store was actually 2 miles inside their set criteria , they already knew of the other telly on offer and had their blag already worked out before we entered the store, even the manager was adamant that they would not match the price, however PC world(owned by the same company) was 3 units up on the retail park and happily matched the offer , they even sent somebody to walk to currys to get the telly for us on a trolley as they had none in stock! The favourite trick is to get the manufacturer to change one digit on the model number of all the tellys they buy from them so it is impossible to find that exact model number cheaper elsewhere despite it being the exact same item, i pretty much refuse to enter currys or comet now due to the way they treat customers and would rather go without than help their sales figures, 99% of everything you buy can be found cheaper on the internet nowdays anyway

Have been watching the on-line price for a drinks blender. Curry's give an online price and a store price on their web page.

For the past three weeks the price has been £89.99 online and £99.99 in-store.

In the past 48 hours, the instore price has suddenly shot up to £139.99 while the online price remains the same.

I guess when their instore sales gets going, they'll be showing a huge discount back down to £99.99.

Worked for Comet many years ago and one year they had their January sale (started Boxing Day) and advertised every single item instore reduced. Around 90% of it was by 1p. Can you imagine how the staff felt spending Xmas Eve after store closing changing every single price ticket. Bunch of !!! holes

Somewhat ironically Comet themselves have just been sold for £2.

So I guess their marketing strategy didn't work out too well then.

They were up for sale for £2 for a while, they increased to £4 for 4 weeks in the previous 26 weeks and then the price was reduced by 50% just prior to the sale

I would avoid places like Currys for a bargain, as all of their stock will cost more than elsewhere. The best time to sniff around for bargains is just after New Year, when even those who claim an early January sale drop their prices even more on unsold items people were too wise to buy at the asking price.

Any item sold in a Currys sale will be available far more cheaply online, some people can be specific, noting the model numbers on items in Currys and looking online for the same product at a bigger reduction.

The FT omitted to report that they also sold the buyers a HDMI Cable (Gold Plated) for £38.99 and a three year warranty for £1.50
  • Shops do it because they know that people are "blinded" by those bright red tags with various numbers crossed out - it's why DFS always have "£900" sofas on sale at £300.

Like all things in retail, consumers get the shops that they deserve. Whilst the public continue to be blinded by "savings" and not "what is a fair price", stores will keep employing these tactics.
