From now on you may feel slightly more nervous every time a brown envelope arrives in the post or the phone rings or a stranger knocks on your door.
HMRC will get you eventually.
It may take time, but then time is what you may get in the end.
Paraphrasing a famous quote, you have to be lucky every time, I only have to be lucky once.0 -

Never underestimate the resourcefulness and down right misdirected vengance of a pished paddy ;+)0 -
HMRC are getting to grips with VAT carousel fraud, the number of people being jailed is on the increase and in each case their wealth and assets are confiscated. Most EU countries are co-operating to trace this fraud. It remains a massive problem and would require wholesale changes to VAT legislation throughout the EU to totally eradicate it, but don't assume that because they're losing billions here, they're not currently interested in the £2,000 you make on eBay.
Not every HMRC compliance officer is working on the VAT fraud, in fact the vast majority are not.
SC is under some sort of delusion in that he believes because he's a 40% taxpayer on his PAYE income, that HMRC won't care about the tax due on his other income. It's a safe bet that he is currently or has in the past completed either a Self-Assessment Tax Return or the shorter Tax Review form, both make absolutely clear that you must declare untaxed income. This alone would be enough for HMRC to prove that he wilfully failed to declare his eBay income. This in turn would allow them to seek interest and penalties beyond the normal 6 year statute of limitations.
The bare minimum is circa 7.5% interest per year as well as a 5% surcharge every 6 months. Depending on the amounts involved they may also press for prosecution for tax evasion, which could result in jail (though not at the moment for obvious reasons...!).Quidco savings: £499.49 tracked, £494.35 paid.0 -

You may be right.
But if I really thought the full weight of HMCS was being used to track down SC and his kin .... I seriously would be thinkin about slittin my wrists (or emigrating) cos in the scheme of things it really is unimportant...and I hope your wrong bro...

:rotfl: Another one who believes everything s/he sees on the TV / reads in mags / newspapers!
I really do love reading these replies though, so do keep 'em coming! I just love the way you think you've got it all worked out and the tax man is "just around the corner" etc. The way you think is the same as all the other muppets out there and that's what makes it so, so easy. If people applied some lateral thinking and considered other possibilities instead of just having this deluded belief that all one needs to do is find out my Ebay user ID (or should that be plural?
) and "hey presto, that's me done for" then it would be a far more interesting and entertaining discussion; at least from my perspective anyway.
You chaps and chapesses continue paying your bit on your twice a year attic clearouts and I'll continue selling my 10,000+ items (all 1p of course
) per year sitting comfy.
Now where did I put that picture of a red rag? :rotfl:

SC, you remind me of Leona Helmsley who famously said “Only little people pay tax”.
The little people who paid their taxes mostly didn’t go to jail.
She did.
