I am always sceptical when a Brand (of anything) compares itself to an unnamed competitor.

They are hardly going to say their own product is not as good.

Funny how golf balls always fly better, further with more feel than the one they made last year. Sometimes they do pull a genie out of the jar but often they have changed a colour or cosmetic design. Or perhaps I just can't play golf;)

Good point about the top premium v. bottom budget and the mounds of grey in the middle.

Also, using your example, context is important. For instance in the Continental commercial it may be that the average of all competitors stopped in 20m (for example:)) but they wouldn't say that.
