Don't dispute we sold secondhand rust buckets to them, but not state of the art missile systems with a likley target in mind..

The "rust buckets" we sold them were the same Type 42 destroyers we had with the, at the time, fairly state of the art sea dart missile system: it was the most up to date area air defence missile we had in service

My recolection was that we had that knowledge last time but that it wasn't taken seriously then either.

Sounds about right - although hard to say with lots of contradictory/self-congratulating memoirs about.

However this time they "have form" for invading & we have been taking them seriously for the past ~30 years

Ascension is the only real forwrd base but that is only about half way there. South Georgia is father away than the Falklands.

The distances are massive. Whilst the Vulcan Bombing raid on the Falklands was largely political/symbolic for the RAF, it took something like 5+? tanker aircraft (think Boeing 737 equivelant) to get just one (out of three) Vulcans there and back. They were all running on vapours when they touched down I believe after nearly a day in the air..

    Just under 4000 miles

However theres no need to repeat Black Buck. The runway is key & becasue we have it we only need to fly one-way. The Typhoons down there did it easily & we can reinforce with Tristar/C17/hercules full of troops/supplies far quicker than they can sail across

It's a wonder Argentina isn't claiming Ascension too!

Did anyone catch this extraordinary story in the Mail? It's so bad its almost funny. Next they'll be telling us to stock up on baked beans and build nuclear shelters in our back gardens.

I'm surprised they havn't moderated out
"Lol that really was dreadful, cringeworthy reading." was that you?

Edit: if you sort by highest rated its even better:

"I remember when Dominic Sandbrook used to be a journalist, this is like witnessing a car crash"
" this is the single most biased worst piece of journalism I've ever read"
    "What absolute tripe."

I wonder how the public here and in the Falklands would feel if a C17 full of combat troops dinked enroute. I remain to be convinced of Typhoon resilience in harsh conditions or whether our partners would be so willing to keep us in parts if they were used in anger.

Don't get me wrong, I don't see why we should hand them over and I doubt they will attack anyway.. I am just not so convinced we have the logistical capacity should things kick off or the will for a protracted stand off at high alert

No, but only because someone beat me to it. I'm off to sort now, so thanks for the suggestion!
