In a fleet a high value assest like Ocean will be defended by multiple Air Defence Destroyers, Anti-submarine Frigates - its lack of armament is an irrelevance.

In a war game probably but do we realistically have Multiple Air Defence destroyers in our shrinking navy, even more unlikely if you add in actually, ready to put to sea for months on end.?

Whilst we may be able to put a small battle group together could we logistically keep it at sea 12000 miles from home and amber or red alert status?

It wasn't just the "battle" that caused problems it was the battering the vessels took in the South Atlantic and mechanical resilience.

At the risk of sounding pedantic could I point out that the Super Etendards of the Argie Air Force weren't outclassed by our Harriers. They were outflown! "Viffing" was a trick which nobody knew about. On paper the Super Etendards were the better plane.

And with a EUSSR hat on who supplied those nice sea skimming exocets?

The infighting between the Navy and RAF heirarchy over how their respective squadrons were used/deployed also caused the aircrew significant problems. Again it was the steely determination of those same aircrew that kept the air cover in place as usual, the ones whose lives depended on it often flying with malfunctioning equipment.

I think Libya would of really worried the Argentinians with the Euro fighter proving itself.

What with Libya having such a state of the art air force and military. Don't think it was really much of a competition.

That would of course be the handful we could actually get into the air and then afford to keep up there, as we can't afford the maintenance package.

It might be good, I don't know but I wouldn't like it to be my get out of jail card.

I would of rated the Libyan air force more than the Argentinian one for two reasons:
    1. Better and more modern jets ie Mirage F1s over the older Mirage 3s
    2. Far more of them
Its got to the stage the argi planes frames are disintegrating. The biggest danger to us is the heavy investment in putting exorcets onto every rubber dingy they have.

Did they actually use them? Would their pilots have been so fanatically obsessed?

Personally I think it will not remain viable politically and economically to maintain the Falklands indefinitely - unless they have do have millions of barrels of oil under them.

Called USA, of course they often support both sides at the same time to ensure that get the result they want:rotfl:

Oh and ensure they invoice you for the use and ensure you pay them back for years to come.

The flag ship is the ship best suited for the Admiral to do thier job on. That tends to mean lots of communications gear and space for them & their staff as well as the ships normal crew. That would make Ocean a good choice - plus it would make it easier for them to Liase with the Ground Force commanger as he'd be on Ocean as well.

Why prefer a Type 45? As an escort it would be put in harms way to defend important ships like Ocean - as were the Type 42s in the Falklands in '82 to protect the carriers & transports

    Andy,

OCEAN wasn't designed for, and isn't equipped to carry out the role of a command and control unit....ALBION/BULWARK have significantly greater comms/C&C facilities. Despite carrying out the role in the second half of the Libya ops, it was a hell of a squeeze and hardly ideal! ALBN/BWRK are much better suited to an embarked Flag staff's needs.....

T45s actually HAVE been designed with enough compartment and communications redundancy to enable them to act as a C&C/HQ platform, i believe, with a particular view to possibly being activated as such in any Falklands conflict, where anti-air warfare will be key.

  • My understanding at the time and from much reading of books by prominent military figures since is that we were lucky to retake the Falklands. A lot of it was done on a wing and a prayer and determination by some gritty individuals pushing things to the limits.

Whilst I doubt the Argentinians will invade again they can make holding them very very costly and that is ultimately what will seal their fate, sooner rather than later, if there isn't "real" oil down there.

This was my understanding too. The logistics of fighting a war miles from home with no support base became problematic with the loss of the merchant ship Atlantic Conveyor. IIRC this was played down but it later came out supplies were very short and any any prolonged conflict would have left our troops with nothing left but to throw rocks.

I'm better at geography than knowing anything about the military, but in such circumstances would it be possible to use one of the other British territories down that way, such as St Helena or Ascension, or South Georgia as a base and shuttle in? I know that these places are still a long way from the Falklands and afaik don't all have airports, but they are a lot closer than the UK.
