Problems with Orange unlocking iPhone 3GS

  • It's as if Orange knew I had just about enough and was seeking further advice. I've just got in from work, checked my email and there was a mail advising me that my handset had been unlocked and gave me some instructions to follow. I am now mobile again after 6 weeks of no phone!! :j

Thank you everyone for all your answers

@John-306 that was exactly the same as me, I had various excuses, delay with apple, someone was on holiday and forgot to put a request in, system errors... just one thing after another.

I am pleased that I have now got rid of everything Orange from my home!!

I've been waiting for Orange to unlock my iPhone 4 since 16th November. I chased them up today, but nothing seems to be happening. If I wanted to switch networks, I'd be furious at this unreasonable delay, but in my case I need it only to use foreign SIMs to avoid roaming charges.

Orange are currently taking 5-6 WEEKS to arrange Apple product unlocking. As others have said, there is no unlock code, it is done through Apple, and Orange will SMS you to advise when the unlocking can be attempted via iTunes. As for them giving misinformation, nothing new there, they told me the same 2 years ago!
  • I'm in the same situation, only realised my iPhone 3GS (purchased from apple.com in Dec 2009) was locked to Orange when my new SIM (Talk Talk) wouldn't work.

Orange are refusing point blank to action my request to unlock the phone because they closed my account YESTERDAY!!

I've emailed them and threatened to complain to CICAS/Ofcom but am not holding out much hope and in the meantime I have a phone I can't use.

Totally disgusted with Orange - what a way to treat a customer of 15 years+
  • This doesn't bode well as I am also planning on unlocking my iPhone 4S with Orange. Do you have to pay right away or does that happen when your phone is actually unlocked as there is a 5 to 6 week lead time for this unlock to happen?

I don't know how this works with iPhones, but I don't think that Apple sell locked phones. If so, I see two possibilities:
    1. Orange locked the phone unlawfully, have to unlock it for free and are refusing to do this unlawfully.
    2. Apple are at fault and must unlock it.

Have tried Apple Customer Services, they say there's NOTHING they can do, it has to be Orange who request the unlock (although the guy I spoke to at Apple was surprised the phone was locked).

So my lovely iPhone is now a very expensive paperweight :-(

Hope you get it all sorted out Susie and I am going through the unlock process now and the guy from Orange kept on stating my phone was a 3GS until I corrected them that its actually a 4S so doesn't bode well.

Thankfully they took down my IMEI number which stated the correct model as well.. now just need to wait up to 30 days.

I rang Orange on 28 Feb to ask for my iphone4 not 4s to be unlocked - they said 4 weeks. Rang them on 25 March to ask how much longer, they said they hadn't had my first request even though they sent me a text on 28 Feb saying thanks for your request to unlock your phone! Once I rang them on 25 March they did e-mail the unlocking instructions to me on 2 April so that was 8 days even though they said it would be 4 weeks from 25 March so at least they did try to do it a bit quicker given it should've been done first time. They then sent me an e-mail with 9 steps on it to unlock it. It actually unlocked by step 3 so as usual their info/process is out of date. I hope this helps you, Good luck and hope you get it unlocked soon.
